Description

Growing up, comic books taught me a lot about history. Especially, military history and World War II. In the comic “universes” of Marvel and DC, World War II was not only fought by the brave men and women of the armed forces, but it was also fought by a multitude of superheroes. Over at Marvel, the war was fought by Captain America, the Sub-Mariner, and the original Human Torch. They would form a group called the Invaders, which later included the British heroes Union Jack and Spitfire. Over at DC, the Justice Society of America, which was comprised of the original Flash, the original Green Lantern, the original Wonder Woman, and many more heroes, battled Hitler’s goose steppers. But here is the fun part…in the 1970s, when the ban on horror comics was lifted, DC decided to combine two popular genres: war and horror. What they created was the Creature Commandos! A special unit comprised of soldiers that looked like the monsters Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Wolf Man, to strike fear into the hearts of the Nazis. Only in comic books could you see such imagination and creativity. Like most war comics, the Creature Commandos was an anti-war book, which often featured the “humans,” and in this case the Nazis, as being more monstrous than the monsters themselves. So, in time for Halloween, here is my depiction of DC’s Creature Commandos, along side Marvel’s Invaders, tearing up a German Panzer IV tank and a Junkers Ju 87 “Stuka” dive bomber. Enjoy!
