Description

— In my opinion, there's nothing more merciful in the world than the human brain's inability to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, but it wasn't meant for us to venture far. Science, which has freed us from the chains of ignorance, has condemned us to wander through a world of darkness and madness, seeking to know that which we were not meant to know. — A paraphrased quote from H.P. Lovecraft.

That day was far from normal. Mumei's coworker, after several months of interacting with her, had begun to sense something off about this brown-haired woman. She seemed to hide many doubts unwittingly. Who was she? What was she? Why did her gaze seem distant? Why did she carry a dagger and write in incomprehensible symbols? Where did she come from? Why did she never seem to sleep? Did she have parents, and why did she interact so much with Kronii? Despite their distant bond, the coworker decided to approach A-chan, one of her close contacts with whom she regularly conversed. The coworker was oblivious, and although she had always been under the risk of the Sultan of Destruction's claws, the accident of creation, Chaos's cancer, and the antithesis of order, today her curiosity was a terrible weapon to face this entity that has made complete civilizations tremble and pee for eons.

Coworker: Hey, A-chan, got a question for you. (A-Chan: Yeah? What's up? She says while snapping pics of her notebook). Now that Mumei's taken a break, I'm curious, what's up with her? (A-Chan: Uh... I'm not quite getting your drift, you mean her behavior? I haven't really had any issues with Moom overall, what's bothering you about her personality? Intrigued but still focused on her task, she's not about to miss this chance to catch up with Suisei, who needs some urgent notes). Well, I just have this feeling she's got something more going on, you know? Like she's more than just your typical idol and bookworm. (A-Chan: Mm, I guess so. She's the guardian of civilization, is that what you mean?).

Once A-chan's coworker got wind of this info, her first reaction was, "Why?" She was totally clueless about Mumei's role, only knowing bits about her appearance, voice, and quirks she'd observed. "Guardian of civilization? Our civilization?" She pondered, then after a quick chat tossing around ideas with A-chan about Nanashi Mumei, she managed to persuade her, albeit hesitantly, to dig deeper into what they knew about Mumei. Especially A-chan, who seemed super curious about it now.

A-Chan: Hey, those are some solid questions. Alright, you got me. Come with me if you want to dig deeper. I think you'll find it intriguing, it's gonna be fun, don't worry.

After a while, footsteps can be heard from outside the doors of the Hololive laboratory. And when the door is opened, the coworker, upon seeing this new unknown environment illuminated with the afternoon sunlight, can see the magnificence of all the Moom clones. There were too many, some were normal like Mumei but without being her because the vast majority of them seemed empty, but there was a detail, limbs of Mumei emerged from the walls and other surfaces, from arms, legs to heads that cried painfully as they hung from blood-stained walls, the smell was putrid, they seemed to have spent years with their flesh exposed, experiencing in life the decomposition of organic matter itself, only with the detail that there were no decomposing organisms in the area, so this process would be eternally slow, added to the fact that they feel everything, making themselves wonder with tears, pain, and desperation: "When will I die? I want to die...". Tragically, as they are made in the image and likeness of their goddess, Nanashi Mumei, they too are immortal, they are trapped as decorations, mere objects to make the coldness of the laboratory look pretty. To Mumei, their lives held no value, regardless of any spark of individuality they might possess.

And they seemed to suffer, their tears were fresh, their suffering was old. Did Mumei do this intentionally? Most likely. And realizing this, the coworker's initial shock turned into a horrifying chill down her spine, freezing her heart in place. It ended with a burst of anger and disgust at the grotesque sight before her: 'What the fuck is this shit supposed to mean?' was the only thought her retarded human brain could process as she witnessed the twisted, screaming body parts protruding from the walls, trapped in an eternal torment.

A-Chan: Yeah, so, some of Mumei's clones got rebellious, and it didn't end well for them when they challenged their owner. She punished them all, like forever, subjecting them to this mild torture of being stuck in the lab. I mean, every time we step on the floor or bump into the walls, they feel it all. And lately, Moom's been on edge, I'm too scared to ask her why, but what you see is part of her art, just to vent a little. She says this as we're walking down the hallway, and my coworker is just staring in horror. She can't believe Mumei would be so cold and uncaring towards the life she's created. And then, out of nowhere, both heard as several clones begged to have their footwear removed, as it hurts: 'No way, you damn weirdos.' A-chan responds casually, who would stop being in that state when she was interrupted by two clones blocking the way.

| Hey, not everyone gets to pass, huh? Hold up there, identify yourselves - Right clone, serious and authoritative.
| Yeah, say the secret password if you want to come in - Left clone, playful and childish.

"You guys are in the way, get the fuck out of the damn way" A-chan comments, pushing aside the genetically duplicated Mumei who was closer. Honestly, both the coworker and she were dealing with much more relevant issues, there was no time for nonsense that would hinder the search. However, her face would feel a blush upon seeing Amelia giving instructions to vacuum one of the clones, which would imply having very valuable help if she were to become interested in joining the investigation to learn more about Mumei, what's the worst that could happen? It'll be fun and exciting. Or at least, that's what the two ignorant and insignificant humans thought, plunging their heads into the wrong lake from which they'll never be able to escape.
