I've seen a number of videos on YouTube in which former citizens of the GDR (German Democratic Republic) expressed nostalgia for the life people had under the communist system. The phenomenon is known as "Ostalgie."

Some people's lives completely unraveled under the competition of western capitalism. People in East Germany had grown accustomed to being guaranteed the basic necessities. I'm quite certain that there are a lot of Americans who would think Honecker's Germany was paradise compared to what they have now.
