Hi! I'm Luciferys and I'm going to show you a step by step of how I work with watercolors.
Art supplies:
Not pictured here, but I also used a jar of water and a paper towel.
Step 1:
I chose 300 gsm hot pressed watercolor paper and I cut the paper in half (this making it A4 in size).
I taped the paper to a hard surface (this will keep the paper in place and also preserve a white border) and started sketching. I usually try to keep the sketch simple.

Step 2:
I covered the edges of the character with masking liquid using a silicone brush (it's easy to clean and it doesn't get ruined by the masking liquid). Masking liquid can be used to protect certain areas of the paper from watercolor. Be sure not to shake the bottle as it creates clumps in the liquid.
I also splattered a bit across the page. This will give me some white dots which I think make the piece look more magical. I did this by flicking the silicone brush (which I also saw being called color shaper).
If you have a clean and intricate sketch you should keep in mind that masking liquid will remove some parts of your drawing when you peel it off. Since my sketch is both messy and plain I do not care much about the lines, but about the overall silhouette. Let the masking fluid dry before painting over it. If it's not dried it can ruin your brushes.
Step 3:
I wet the paper with a flat synthetic brush and apply yellow in the center and some green and blue around it. I use wide strokes and watered down colors. The idea is to have the base colors on paper, details come in later. If the colors are too dark you can lift them with a clean paper towel. I let this layer dry and then added trees, branches and vegetation. I switched to waterbrushes since I am more used to them and they are more convenient for me. I have 3 different sizes at my disposal: small, medium and large. They are easy to control and I don't have to worry that my cats will spill my water jar all over my desk.
I try to make the foreground darker than the background. I add less water when I want to paint the areas darker.
The Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolors are Japanese watercolors and behave differently than western watercolors. Their composition is different. Besides the pigment and gum Arabic they can also contain animal hide glue, glycerin, beeswax, sugar and sugar syrup. I find them to be more vibrant. They can be watered down to increase transparency or used in the 'creamy form' (by letting water sit a bit in the pan these colors become very creamy) to be more opaque. When put on paper they kind of 'float' on top of the paper instead of getting sucked into the paper. This gives you more time to work. They are also easy to lift with a paper towel or clean brush.
Step 4:
I removed the masking liquid gently with my finger. If you aren't gentle enough you can rip the paper.
I created a simple lineart with fineliners (both 0,5 in size). I used the brown liner for the skin, hair and brown clothing and the blue one for the cloak. I like using colored fineliners as they are not as harsh as black ones against the paper. I also added more vegetation.
Step 5:
I added the base colors for the character and tree. I let this layer dry and then add shading using watercolor brushes.
I used watercolor pencils for the skin and hair. They are great to reach small areas.
Step 6:
I darkened the bottom part of the tree and added more vegetation.
I shaded her cloak with with a blue watercolor pencil and added more subtle shading to her skin and hair. I'm not heavy handed with the pencils and start by softly filling in areas and gradually increase the pressure. I leave the pencils as is in some areas (without wetting), while in others I use a waterbrush to blend them in.
I used a white gel pen to add a few strands of hair, white dots to her eyes, nose and lips. Using the same blue fineliner from before I lined the trees and added a decorative border to her cloak.
I like to add shinny stuff to my artworks. This time I chose interference watercolors. Unfortunately, the camera doesn't capture all of their magic, but you can see her eyes and areas of the background and parts of her clothing shine when light hits them. Even if these sort of watercolors (not only interference colors, but also metallic and sparkly colors) don't show perfectly in pictures, I still love to add them for my viewing pleasure.
I think using pictures is the better way to explain how interference colors work. They show really well over darker areas and they are barely visible over lighter areas. However, when you look from a certain angle you can see that they shine on both dark and light areas. The shine effect is more subtle on lighter areas.
Step 7:
I used the white watercolor to add some details to the trees (this brand of watercolor can get pretty opaque like I said). I added more vegetation using markers and the white gel pen. I also used some green watercolor to fill in some of the areas between the branches.
After that I removed the masking tape using a hair dryer on low heat. The warm air makes the glue of the masking tape easier to detach from the paper.
As a final touch you can adjust the colors and contrast digitally to your liking.
