Description For school, the topic was book cover. I chose Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden.

I was halfway through the first painting when the file got corrupted and everything was lost, somehow from that frustration I went turbo and redid this new one in about a day.

Anyway the format sorta works as a wallpaper too, so enjoy!

Beautiful. I probably stared at this piece for five minutes and still found something to grab my attention. At first I thought you painted it traditionally the brush strokes were so moving. This really reminds me of some chinese painting I saw previously. If this was for school I hope you passed with flying colors!

You know, right as I hit submit something else caught my attention. Why did you choose to drip the background red in the lower right? Red is a powerful color and it really draws attention to the white and gold florals. Using such a saturated red to echo the kimono pattern over the piece draws the eye to the attention to detail. I love the almost translucent portion of the cranes' wings that really give depth to the piece. It feels as though they are weightless and flying off the page. The other question I had was why did you do the hills in the upper center (I am assuming they are mountains/hills.) I understood the sun image in the left corner (Japan is the land of the rising sun.) I do enjoy the hills (they are well painted) and they help balance the upper left corner, but then I see the dripping background in the lower right again...

Overall, this is beautiful, and I can honestly say I have been looking at this for over 10 minutes and still enraptured by it. Excellent work.

hi there,
just want to comment on such great work you have here, i currently just made this my background, i have an apple 30" display and running at 2500x1600 resolution, it just looks incredible

i personally loved the movie and thought the controversy (chinese actress Zhang Ziyi playing lead in a movie based on Japanese characters) was interesting (musn't forget Gong Li either, lol )

again, great work.........

I'm glad you went turbo! It's a very nice piece, and it brings back good memories for me as well.

I would definitely buy it with this cover! Absolutely stunning! The placement is good and the depth of colour is wonderful! Those cranes in the middle - would they be twining around the spine? I maybe would've put just one on the back cover so you could see it in full although I can't really judge without seeing this in it's 3D form. Still - absolutely gorgeous!

luciole In reply to Cinnamon87 [2008-07-08 08:55:48 +0000 UTC]

Thank you ^^ yes this is the 3D cover, and the cranes in the middle would be on the really thick spine. So it is really kind of like 3 pictures blended into one.. I'm glad you could see through that DX Many people judged this as a single painting which is wrong because that way, the composition is all screwed up. It's really meant to be a jacket that goes around a book.

Cinnamon87 In reply to luciole [2008-07-09 04:29:12 +0000 UTC]

ahhh, very thick spine hey? That would definitely work then again beautiful job! I can't believe you did it in such a short amount of time - that is my worst nightmare, losing all my work - damn computers!
