Well, still...after a month, you haven't found any Lapis Lazuli? Or have you ever tried experimenting? I know that the first few months of playing Minecraft where you don't know much are the funnest, so I'll only tell you this: Experiment with colorful things.

Yes; animals spawn anywhere where there's lit up grass, so if you don't want them in there you should replace the floor.
