I'm usually not into the fantasy/magic realm but the color palette on this is so appealing and welcoming, its just gorgeous to look at. Awesome piece my friend.

Well, I'm guessing those are spirit animals or ghosts, a mother and child, and they can't cross the river or they'd vanish, (common spirit behavior. Otherwise why wouldn't momma bear just go get her own apples?). If they wanted to cross into the mortal realms they'd need to eat food from the other side. The boy also can't cross the river, or he'd be lost in the other realm. So he uses some power obtained earlier to set the spirit animals/ghosts free. Maybe it's his mother and a sibling in another form.
Maybe the boy is the one who's the spirit, and he's trying to lure some forest animals over to his side. If they ate the apples, they'd be caught with him forever.

He is on a quest. The princess of the kingdom he lives in fell victim of a curse.
Before it was too late and the curse became permanent, the king asked all the people to find a cure.
He was traveling into the deepest parts of the woods where legend said there was a powerful gem capable of removing any curse when he came to this river, but he couldn't cross it because on the other side was one of the guardians of the gem. Being a clever and peaceful guy he is offering the apples as a peace offering, gaining permission to pass and making a couple of friends in the process. ; )

It's really cute! I t looks like these creature can't eat apples because they are to hard to catch on the trees and so this little boy uses his magical power to pick some apples to feed this poor animals and then they become friends! I like the contrasted colors and the cute scenery of these work! Well done LuigiL. Hope to see more of your work soon!
