Before Marcy had ever been captured by the Core, Amy was the first to test an implant which could manipulate the emotions of a mentally unstable subject. Not only did Amy fit the criteria, she was a engineering major and had superb intellect which allowed her to create her suit and probably many more things the Core could only dream of. The Core was successful with the implant and indeed operated as intended with her unstable nature almost killing her friends. The Core then turned to Marcy Wu for full body control rather than emotional control. However, one of the Core's oversights was to combat the emotional devastation of hurting the ones she holds dear and so after Mei persuades her, she overcomes the Core manipulation, destroying the implant and fully reuniting with her friends, either that or Milo was getting real close to destroying the implant.
