Description Day 29 of Inktober 2023. Today is Nick Valentine from Fallout 4

I know Fallout 4 has a reputation for being… not good but I enjoyed my time in the commonwealth. This is probably partially due to the fact that Fallout 3 and New Vegas are so unbelievably unstable on current hardware that it genuinely stopped being funny. I should explain that I don’t mod games. I don’t know how to and I don’t trust websites that host mods to not actually be filled to the tits with RATs and key loggers so I just don’t but that does mean that I get to play vanilla Bethesda games ….yaaaay(!) Yeah Fallout 4 was actually really stable for me on my old laptop. I didn’t come across any glitches until I was tens of hours into the game and it only crashed like 4 times in the probably over 100 hours I played it which considering New Vegas managed that before I got to character creation was pretty impressive for them.

I’m not defending 4 for this decision but the fact you couldn’t choose to be an asshole didn’t effect me because… Well being mean is mean so I didn’t try to. The illusion of choice is very effective when you have literally no intention to select the other options. Obviously the options being fake does suck but it didn’t affect my experience with the game. I was only ever sarcastic once and it made my character inexplicably synth-racist against Nick and I felt so bad I never picked that option again.

Speaking of Nicky, I love him and he was my best friend in that game. The only time I didn’t have Valentine as my companion was when I literally had to have another character for a quest line and when that was done, I’d go and get Nick back. It’s kind of interesting because I rarely had companions in Skyrim and my play style was the same between the two games. I guess he just really vibed with me?

Incase you read my comic series, I tend to role play as my characters in rpgs like these and invariably it’s Ace. So Ace and Nick were travelling around the Commonwealth together  helping Synths escape by the Railroad and over arming every small settlement to make the Minutemen a horrifyingly powerful force. I know a lot of people found those ‘settlement in the need of help’ missions really annoying but I liked them because I play video games for the help all the people power fantasy and it increased the silly political role play I had going on where the Minutemen actually were doing something. If you want to know what I did at the end game… I never actually finished Fallout 4. I’m not sure why, I think I got to the point where I was going to have to turn a whole faction against me? I probably would have killed of the Brotherhood though. It might have come down to a coin toss between them and the institute.

I normally draw a monster a day for Ink/spooktober. For my 2019 Inktober, they're here .
And here's 2020,
2021’s
and 2022’s.
and 2023’s.
