I know that Twilight was the one who created the crystals. But I was thinking of an AU story where Twilight and Cadence went off to a war that broke out between the three tribes, but got killed in battle. Without the two alicorns Opaline is able to infiltrate Equestria Flurry and Luster Dawn try to figure out a way to save their world, and being naive an not fully understanding the ways of friendship the two create the unity crystals in a desperate attempt to keep it away from Opaline.
