Carlson was walking until he spotted a female Sprigatito. She is like Jes in some ways, so Carlson couldn't help but want that female Sprigatito for himself because he's reminded of Jes in that way. And in the end, he ended up having that Sprigatito in his team and nicknamed her Jes.

This is based off Carlson's first Pokémon adventure in the Paldea region and he chose Sprigatito as his starter. And yes, that Sprigatito was a female and he nicknamed her Jes.
