Introducing Mari Ryo!

A 23 year old rebel with a cause who doesn’t care for politics. She wants the world to let go of its old ways and get with modern times. Much like many youth do these days.

Unfortunately she’s not the child her parents wished for but the one they got. At least her name was ironic. Not being the favorite didn’t make Mari work harder or ache for her parents approval. The neglect gave her more freedom to do as she pleases. Who was going to stop her? Definitely not her parents who couldn’t care less if she lived or died. She was very much a delinquent who was doing well in school and kept her head above water. An independent child in many ways, having to raise herself. All while watching her brothers and sisters receive all the love, praise, and affection. The moment she turned 18 she moved out of the house. Her sanity being restored and finally free to be herself. The transition felt easy and natural. She grew to enjoy being alone.

Mari wears black despite the color being reserved only for those who served, their families, and work the government. She believes anyone and everyone can wear black because the royal family is long gone. Is she wrong?

Not only does she rebel against the rules with her clothing but her body as well. Adorned with piercings and tattoos from head to toe. Despite having naturally beautiful dark hair, she bleaches and locs it up. She also loves to wear heavy makeup that takes hours out of her days. After all she’s an artist and her body is a canvas. Mari’s favorite place to hang out is at the tattoo shop. Where she’s working towards an apprenticeship for her dream job of being body mod artist. During the slow days at the shop, she’s found hanging out with her friends. Engaging in heated discussions with Thea which sound like arguments amongst the others. She’s a night owl with a love for hard rock and metal.

Indra was influenced and inspired by Mari’s aesthetic so much that she decided to get some adornments as well. They used to hang out a lot during those sleepless nights Indra was up studying. Sometimes as a tutor because math was Indra’s weakness.

Mari is fluent in social media but she doesn’t post much outside of body mods and aesthetics. It’s to not bring unwanted attention to the fact that she wears black.

Will her friendship with Indra finally get her and the world the freedom to wear what it wants?

Mari was another fun character to make. I really got to play with makeup, piercings, and hair options. I really wanted to give her that alternative appearance which is once again, inspired by someone I used to know.

She is an Asian character but it can be hard to tell with all that heavy makeup on.

I gave her locs because I wanted her to be from an indigenous group of Asians that do wear locs. Besides, wearing them alone is a rejection of societal vanity. It’s in line with everything she stands for.

I called her Mari because it means “rebellious” and “wished for.” While Ryo means “distance” and “dragon.” Suitable for a loner who is still alone, even with her friends.

Naturally I had to make her stand in the place she’s happiest. A tattoo shop!

Her role in the story isn’t major but she also has her moments. She’s also a member of the friend group so she’ll have to be present in some way or another. At least I’ll have her model for when I need it.
