It was early morning, Rekoj couldn't sleep. They were anxious, waiting for the next day. The big day. Bugs crawled inside of them as thought over the plan a hundredth time. Tumble had found some leads regarding missing meeps. While most were found, there were a few that remained missing. These few were tied back to one specific location, an old schoolhouse on the edge of town. Rinley had gone to investigate, finding few signs of life. The only clue they had were a few unusual floorboards. Possible hidden passages? Nevertheless, this was their only lead to finding Ash, so they had planned a rescue mission for the following Saturday. Now it was Saturday morning.
As they walked to the old school, Rekoj was mumbling to themselves. Rinley and Tumble were in front, followed closely behind by members of the adventurer's guild and some deputies. Despite the comfort of traveling in a such a large group, Rekoj was still scared, no, petrified of finding the facility. Ash had only briefly described the place but it was enough for their imagination to think of so many horrible things. Blades for slicing, needles for piercing, meeps crying for help, all mutilated or mutated, surrounded by mad scientists cackling maniacally. The bugs in their gut squirmed faster and seemed to get bigger.
They finally arrived at the abandoned school, Rinley began reciting the plan to everyone. Rekoj sat on the ground, feeling sick. They didn't want to go in but they knew it was the right thing to do. They shivered and sweat, closing their eyes. Trying to imagine rescuing Ash, he sat in the corner of a cell, hunched over. He was just as scared as Rekoj but then he turned around to see them. The meep from his coma, rushing toward him, picking him up and racing out of that horrid place.
But as they were nearing the exit, Rekoj tripped. Looking back, they saw a paw had grabbed their leg, a paw with a long gooey arm attached. The creature moved closer as laughter could be heard. As it came into the light, they saw that it wasn't a meep, but rather a dozen of them. Stitched and glued together, with blank eyes and gaping mouths, whispering horrible things. A hand reached forward and grabbed their shoulder. Rekoj yelped, turning around to see Tumble behind them. She looked concerned, and it was at this point Rekoj realized was shaking rather violently. "Listen kid, it was very brave of you to come with us," She said crouching down to their level. "But you don't have to come in with us, you've done enough." Rekoj breathed a sigh of immense relief, the bugs shrinking and slowing their pace.
They stood by a nearby tree as they watched the others go inside the building. They were tasked with getting back up if the group didn't return in half an hour.
Ash sat at a table, slurping a pink fluid threw a straw, while an older kitter injected him with various other liquids. Breakfast. He'd quickly been put back on his usual "medication" and the monotonous routine started back up again. But ever since he woke up, the facility and his routines no longer seemed normal. He was no longer allowed to rest since he was now behind in his regimen, his food seemed blander than usual and his ears and nose were gone and covered by stitches. But the most odd thing was he couldn't remember his coma. He remembered the surgery prior to his sleep but when he awoke he couldn't remember it.
While it's possible to forget one's dreams, this had lasted weeks and Ash felt it contain some important information. Then again, he woke up in a cold sweat and felt frightened so perhaps it's better to forget.
After breakfast, Ash went to the training room. A few other kitters were there practicing their magic. He was lead to some boulders and weights when his supervisor suddenly vanished. Assuming they'd gone to do work, Rekoj began lifting the boulders, first with his arms then with his magic, each by size. While he trained some more supervisors left the room. Must have been a group project or something for the Superiors. It wasn't until the other kitters started talking did Ash feel like something was off. Was it a test? The others seemed confused as well, unsure of whether to keep training or look for the supervisors. Ash slithered to the center of the room and cleared his throat. "Everyone, may I have your attention?" The others turned toward him, a slight nervousness crawled up his spine but he continued. "None of us know where the supervisors have gone but it is most likely little cause for concern. A group of five kitters will search around for them," Ash began to pick kitters for the search. "In the meantime we will continue our training until they get back." "But what if the supervisors are really gone?" asked a small yellow meep, the others began mumbling to themselves and a slight pang of worry crossed his heart. He took a deep breath and clapped his claws for attention. "Considering the time they have and haven't been around us it is, highly unlikely that they are Really gone, even when they have work to do they are relatively close by." This calmed the others greatly and with that they went back to training.
An estimated 10 minutes later, the search team returned. Everyone in the room turned toward them, waiting for news. "Where are the supervisors?" Ash asked. The team stared on in shock. After a minute one of them said, "They've all gone."
Ash's heart stopped, the others looked at the team with disbelief. Why would they leave, why would they leave them. Slowly disbelief turned to confusion and confusion turned to panic, fear and anger. Everyone in the training room began either rushing around, crying or running out to double check. Ash sat with some meeps, racking his brain for answers but getting nowhere. After 15 minutes of mayhem, a few kitters rushed into the room, looking petrified. "There are unknown kitters upstairs!" They yelled. Everyone stopped, "Unknown?" a few whispered. "What do they look like?" someone asked. "They're kitters but they're not supervisors or any of us." "What do they want?" A teary eyed meep asked. "We don't know, they're trying to remain unseen but we spotted them on the stairs." "What should we do?" Ash asked. "We don't know." They suddenly realized that they had literally no idea what to do in this situation, they were never taught or trained how to deal with "alien" kitters. They all sat on the floor, hopeless, waiting for the aliens to find them and do whatever.
When they finally did come, everyone turned to face them. Their faces either showed fear, anger or confusion. But the kitters din't attack or yell and they didn't look very scary. The group of strangers walked forward and started leading out of the room. Some of them were carried, some followed behind, some even followed beside the strangers. Ash slithered behind them all, unsure what was happening and not sure of the outcome.
