It's a real shame what the Man of slenderness has gone through. In the beginning he was an intriguing being with a lot of potential.
But with some exceptions, he's just been used for cheap scares and cash grabs.
While I'm too chicken to play the games I will say my personal favorite is Slender: The arrival, for being the closest game to provide lore on the character.
While I have researched him, mostly on the slenderman wiki, this theory is a combination of facts and ideas, so I ask that you keep an open mind about my thoughts.

We'll start with the basics: Slenderman is a being in a suit and tie with no face, he is tall and has tentacles/tendrils that sprout from his back. He's been known to kidnap children, hunt and kill those who enter his woods. Those who survive this encounter will be left with either the Sickness of the Obsession. The sickness causes intense paranoia, coughing, nausea and exhaustion. There is no cure and the victim usually takes their own life to find relief. The obsession causes intense interest, research and even worship of Slenderman, often leading to the victim becoming a Proxy-A slave to slenderman.

With this out of the way we can now begin:
Firstly, his residence-While in some web series(Marble Hornets, Tribe Twelve etc.) Slenderman has been shown to follow his victims, in the games he's been confined to one area. The most popular being the woods. Naturally this could be a simple design choice to have him mistaken for the trees but what if he's trapped here. By some ritual or curse, one of his victims confined him to one area to roam. He is unkillable so containing him would be the next best option.
With that said why does he do what he does? In Slender: The arrival, one of his notes said that "Hands have teeth" so could he just be finding food? It seems unlikely since he's been able to survive so long with little nourishment. If he's confined to one area a meal would seldom come. Does he just want to spread fear, or raise an army. This isn't clear but it could also be said that he just doesn't others trespassing, if the woods is just his home then he may just not want visitors.
Finally, what is Slenderman? Some sources say he's a demon, an experiment gone wrong, a complex machine and even terrifying faerie.

Now this is where we get into speculation territory because I have one idea as to what he is.
Going on the idea that he was an experiment, similar to the Haunt game, he started as just a man maybe a father who was part of an experiment that left him mutilated and embued with new abilities. The reason why I say he was a father is because of his original intentions, kidnapping children. He was first seen stalking children and it may be possible that he simply wanted children to care for. In that sense the proxies could be just the children he cares for, warped by presence and power. Adding to the confinement theory, the people running the experiment managed to close him off from the rest of world. Now the sight is just a locked off area where teenagers go to investigate. One of them eventually leaving notes as warnings for others. So why does he attack you? Well, in all the games we simply see him catch you, not kill you. What of the sickness and obsession, the sickness may be an unintended side effect or his way getting rid of evidence. If word got out about the Slenderman being real then no one would come to his woods and possibly try to destroy him. As for the obsession, as stated before, victims will become proxies.

Now, I'll admit, this theory may just be created because my interest in tortured characters but still.
Even though Slender's just a meme at this point, I still hope that he gets a proper revival.
