Description

At the edge of a pond in the middle of a forest during the early Pliocene of what is now Southeastern North America, a lone male Gomphotherium chops off a hickory tree with its lower tusks in order to get to its sap-much to the disappointment of two Paraliurus who have been hanging out eating the tree’s nuts and eaves.

Red pandas first evolved in the Oligocene of Europe and alongside the Gomphotheres, which evolved in Africa, they dispersed into Asia and North America during the Miocene. Some like Simocyon evoved hypercarnivorous habits, while others evolved into arboreal omnivores like the surviving genus Ailurus fulgens, which is only found in the eastern Himalayas and Southern China.
