Description My 16th entry to #spectember2023
The Odontotheres of Mars ll have evolved to occupy a wide variety of ecological niches in different biomes spread out across the planet’s continents; some such as the Plains Zipper-Jaw are fully-terrestrial omnivores, some are huge, long-necked browsers, and others such as Odontotherium amphibius, or the Large-Tusked Odontothere are semiaquatic herbivores that occupy a similar niche to hippos.
Odontotherium amphibius inhabits rivers, lakes and other freshwater environments in tropical forest areas of the supercontinent of Yariloia and its surrounding landmasses. It has a head-to-tail length of 8 meters long, weighs more than 4 metric tons, stands more than 2.5 meters tall at the shoulder, and is capable of running 35-40 km/h over short distances. Even though its diet largely consists of aquatic plants and grasses, the Large-Tusked Odontothere sometimes occasionally consumes floating carrion if given the chance and will also come out of the water to feed on grasses during the dusk. O.amphibius lives in small herds consisting of large, aggressive males who control a certain stretch of water and a harem of up to 25 cows and calves, and mating and birthing both occur underwater. The Large-Tusked Odontothere also shares its swampy habitat with the giant 2 to 3-meter-tall heron Airone gigas and numerous species of amphibian, crustacean, waterfowl, freshwater fish and side-necked turtle.
