In my interpretation of the Gillman, I have decided to explain WHY, as they say in the movie, there is nothing like him in the fossil record. This is because the creature does not come from Earth at all. Millions of years ago, during the Devonian period, an alien colony ship crashed into the ocean, stranding the aquatic beings on Earth, though, given that Earth in this time period was one massive landmass of swamps surrounded by oceans, the creatures found themselves stranded in a paradise.
