Description
DragonFly is a long range anti-infantry magnetic railgun bow.It uses magnetic power to project arrows in place of a traditional string, so dragonfly has no strings, but has the feel of it being there due to the magnetic pull.
It isnt fully charged until a trigger on the handle is pulled. which then allows full power of the magnets, which launches the arrow at high velocity.
pull-back is initially only 20lbs, but then becomes 1000+ when the rail magnets activate.
made in autocad 02, took 3h 20m to make.

I saw this pict a while back, but waited til i did my research first (which more people need to do). Ive noticed that alot of the comments are about the energy issue (what isnt these days).
I didnt like the idea of having a battery (EXLOSIVE) of that size near me instead of my enemies. Then again there really is no such thing as "safe energy".
Another way to power such a device could be possible with the wireless transmision of energy; via induction of the planet or Electromagnetic radiation absorbsion.
I am a big fan of bows and the like. I have one thing i think would add to it. Using a quiver that has arrows pre-notched on the bowstring that you load onto the side like a clip to increase firing rate. Let me know what you think. Im here to help.

Of course, you'd have to let go of the arrow pretty quickly.

I've seen all the weapons you put on devianart and they are amazing, If humanity had these weapons there would be death all around, People would go insane for power or go power crazy and go on a killing spree for the fun of it.

Awesome concept, i would definitely like to get my hands on something like that as for batteries, sooner or later we'll develop dark matter energy cells which have unlimited potential

With 1k lb draw, I'd assume our soldiers would have those fancy exoskeletons that enhance their strength and such. I like your futuristic take on a classic weapon.

hahaha!! Tsk.. if your gadget was a tough looking like that one, man, you gotta prepare tons and tons of batteries for it to last long, and hey batteries aren't cheap.. hehe Malmida really got some wild concepts about weapons.. and i think what's so good about this guy is that he knows how to fuse these out of this world conepts into one solid idea. man he's really awesome for a 19 yr old modeler. when i was 19, i was like playing at backyard of our neighbors house and didn't know anything about computers way back then hehe except for the Family computer or the ATARI hoho

hahahahaha
i can always fall back on "well in the future we will have some kind of battery that will meet the requirments"!
but idc. lol. no clue how this would actually works, and in all seriousness would be a much more fitting theory when applied to a crossbow instead. however thats just a railgun. so i geuss the bow is kool heh
i just like sci-fi. and describing things. and weapons!
so tyvm

it made me think about it's energy consumption.. it's really a very very nice style, but when it comes to performance, that one looks really powerful and lightweight but compensated by a very high energy consumption. overall, Still great and amazing piece of art.

i love your work, especially this one since I've gotten into archery a bit for about a month now
i have a question: where do you put your hand to hold the bow (i don't see any comfortable or stable part from which you can grab it)?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
malmida In reply to RobertHohan [2008-05-01 08:49:57 +0000 UTC]
thnx so much!
and as for the handle, look at the middle of the bow. the handle is the only thing on the bow that i made gray. the rest are dark gray or white or yellow.
the handle is that curvey bar on the opposite side of the yellow lens. if u look real closley you can see the little piston trigger that sets off the rails.
as for stability, you can actually just set the bow down on one of its arms vertically. since the bow doesnt actually bend when you pull back the arrow. its kinda like its own tripod....only a .....monopod? lawl

now i really get it
it's really awesome
another thing though: you said that it worked like a railgun (wiki: [link] ), but if it's magnetic, wouldn't it be a coilgun (wiki: [link] ) actually ?
please explain it to me, since i'm only 16 and don't know that much physics yet

malmida In reply to RobertHohan [2008-05-02 18:52:13 +0000 UTC]
hehehe
well either a rail or coil gun would work for this. a rail gun is like 2 rails next to eachother that are highly magnetized. then you put something like a metal bullet at the end and the magnetic force pulls it along the rails immensley fast, jetting the bullet out (idk if uve ever played metal gear solid 2, but fortunes big gun is a rail gun). a coil gun is just a magnetic coil (and a coil is just a spring btw). coils are special when it comes to magnetism, becuase they have all of their magnetic force at the center of the coil instead of the coil itself. so things wont stick to a magnetic coil, they will try to go inside of it. so if you have a super magnetic coil, then you can put something metal inside of it and it will shoot out the other end just like a rail gun.
the thing about both is that they arn't actually pushing or pulling the object forward, they are actually pushing the object towards the other rail or other side of the coil. so each rail wants the object to go against the other rail, but since they are both pushing equally hard the object is just going to be shot out. anything with any momentum at all will be accelerated insanley.
so dragonfly just has electromagnets connected to rails (or a coil if you want), and has a second set of magnets to create slight weight on the arrows pullback. then you pull the trigger and the rails turn on, you let go of the arrow, and the momentum from the second magnets kinda help out the acceleration from the rails. *SWOOOOOOOSH*
hope that helps alittle heh

yeah i guess im young. and autocad is the only thing ive been able to get my hands on, and ive been using it for about 3 years. and taught it in my architecture classes lol. the teacher adored me.
as for my descriptions, i just have an over-active imagination and like sci-fi kinda stuff. i feel like it shows

I am started on a education as technical designer, where we draw in autocad. but for now it is only 2D and buildings :\ when i play with 3D it is usually SketchUp, Hexagon or Vue but I am not that good
you should make some acad tutorials, I cant find anyone elsewhere on the internet xD
and there is nothing wrong with your "over-active imagination", think it's nice, you give your creations live in a way
