Fun fact; this character is a revival of a LONG ago scrapped one, named 'Opall', he was, in his original form. Val's brother & a Prince as well. Neither of these is the case for this present incarnation of the character.

-------------------------

Name: Opal Hadali
Nickname(s): N/A for him. He has named his Sea’s Flame (fire coral) “Aedival” (eye-di-vol)
Age: 31

Race/species: Merfolk
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Pansexual
Occupation: Trident Guard

-------------------------

Height: 11’3” (5’5” not counting tail)
Weight: 327 Pounds
Hair Color: Crimson
Eye Color: Yellow
Blemishes/Tattoos:
Clothing Style: Does not wear clothes. Nonetheless maintains a well-kept appearance. He polishes his scales to a sleek shine, and keeps his mane of hair bushy and well groomed. Opal’s ‘horns’ are actually live sea snails. Which he occasionally must remove to allow them to graze on algae.

-------------------------

Likes:
✧The Trident: Above all else. Opal possesses an intense love for his home city. He could never live anywhere else, and is prepared to do anything to defend it if needed.
✧Jellyfish: He just thinks they’re neat. Opal also finds that they are great training partners. To swim through a school of jellyfish with nary a sting is an incredible test of agility and speed.
✧Bioluminescence: Be it corals, sea angels, or microbes. Opal finds bioluminescent things mesmerizing to stare into. Nothing can distract him from his job, but the sight of the ocean aglow off in the distance has tempted him before.

Dislikes:
✧Land Folk: Less an outright dislike so much as a sense of caution. Opal has had bad experiences with humans in the past. Driving noisy boats and leaving fishing gear around Trident waters. He tends to assume that land-folk near the Trident are up to something.
✧Dolphins: They are in his view, irritating pests. On more than one occasion. He’s had to swim off beyond the city limit to retrieve objects stolen by the playful cetaceans. Once, a young dolphin tried to take Aedival from him! Only letting go when the sting set in.
✧Sweet Foods: Opal was raised on savory fish and bitter sea greens. Even only mildly sweet flavors taste quite potently sour to him. So you can only imagine what sort of an experience something like a fruit or candy might be for the merman.

Personality Strengths:
✧Resolute: It’s hard to upset Opal. On the job it’s difficult to even momentarily distract him. If something needs doing. He will see that it is done without deviation.
✧Patient: He kind of has to be patient. Being that he spends a considerable portion of the day staring blankly at the open ocean, and making the same patrol rounds about the city border.
✧Honorable: Opal is an upstanding, polite man. Only of his few enemies does he speak negatively. Even to a would be intruder. He insists on swaying them away by words unless their actions or persistence force his hand.

Personality Weaknesses:
✧One at a Time: A natural consequence of getting tasks done without deviation. Is that Opal can only focus on one thing at once. He struggles to multitask.
✧Reactive: Opal has very good reflexes for when it comes time to act. At the same time, however. This means he can be somewhat jumpy when something happens to look or sound similar to a call to action. Only to then be flustered if it turned out he was wrong about that.
✧Once Hurt, Twice Scorned: It's not easy to get on Opal’s bad side, but once you are there. Good luck ever leaving it! The number of people he considers enemies are very few, but he’s loath to even acknowledge them as anything more than threats or annoyances. It should be noted, however, that it usually takes repeat offenses to wind up in that position.

Fears:
✧She of the Deep: The titanic sea monster from the legend of the first Trident Guard. Though Opal is intent on slaying the beast. He has a healthy respect for the monster. To touch its flesh is to die painfully. He knows he cannot afford to be cocky, should the opportunity to engage Her arise.
✧Intruders: If anything were to happen to the Trident. Opal would never forgive himself for it. He sometimes has nightmares about someone slipping through the cracks and wreaking havoc.

-------------------------

Fatal Flaw: Overzealous - Opal will NOT budge on matters related to his job. Nor on any of his stronger beliefs. If the merman is convinced that you are a threat to the Trident. It will be very difficult to prove that this is not true, and he will demand that you leave at once.

Personality: Dignified and with an air of pride. Opal takes his job as a guardsman extremely seriously. Not a soul gets by without permission on his watch. He does not brag, instead choosing to let his deeds and collected attitude speak for him. He’s very kind to fellow merfolk, and necessarily cautious around land-folk such as humans and elves. Opal is overall well-rounded and upstanding if a bit stern on the job.

Skills/Talents:
✧High Pain Tolerance: A necessity to wield Aedival. Opal is resilient to many forms of pain. To the sting he is immune. To the scraping rough hide of the coral his hands have calloused and hardened. It takes a lot to get him to wince.
✧Finesse: Fire coral possesses a powerful sting and has countless sharp edges. Coral, however, isn’t renowned for sturdiness. One can’t just bludgeon a foe with the stuff and expect it to remain intact. And so, Opal possesses considerable dexterity. Able to make calculated moves with both precision and accuracy.
✧Agility: Opal’s lithe form and supple muscles afford him both great speed and flexibility. Around the average merfolk he can swim circles. It's been rumored he once caught up with a speedboat just to call them out on nearly trespassing.

Backstory: Among the merfolk of the Trident. One story is known among all.

~~~
It is said that in the infancy of the Trident.
When the city was naught more than a hamlet ‘long the coast.
A silent shadow swept through the sea.
Leaving not a corpse in Her wake.
Night after night closer She drew.
With every vanished shoal, Every bleached reef.
Ever fearful the merfolk grew.
Mere sunrises remained before the fateful dusk.
When pale tentacles would creep through the streets.
Dragging all witnesses to the abyss from whence she came.
Reducing the Trident to an empty husk.
One Merman would not allow this future to pass.
Brandishing a spear, He took for the shelf.
Peered into the abyss below.
Long He waited before the dark one made Herself known.
Large as a galleon, tentacles longer than spears adozen.
Her countless eyes all stared through Him.
Daring the Merman to move first.
Steeling himself, with a dash swift as a gale.
He swam round’ the beast, stabbed with a deft flick of his tail.
Alas, she remained unfazed.
Intent all the same in enveloping the merfolk’s home in Her foul haze.
The Merman had to make haste.
Lest he and all He knew be reduced to waste.
With hands bare he grasped a horn of Sea’s Fire.
For despite the pain, all was dire.
‘Tween lethal tentacles He swam.
Pon’ Her eye, the flames rammed.
The dark one recoiled, and turned tail.
The Merman watched, proud to have not failed.
Never again did the merfolk live in fear of the deep.
Under the watch of the Trident Guard, peacefully they could sleep.
Opal is the descendant of the hero of this story. The first of the Trident Guard, and first wielder of Sea’s Flame. His bloodline resistant to the potent sting of the coral.
From earliest childhood he trained to become a guardsman. To follow the legacy of all those who came before him. During one such training session along the continental shelf.
In the eons that followed the time since the legend. The Sea’s Flame, which he christened “Aedival”, had grown from an irregular lump of coral to a fine two-handed staff. Dutifully grown and pruned generation after generation.
He has served as a Trident Guard for over a decade now, and takes his job incredibly seriously. Opal has not allowed a single trespasser even near the city gates under his watch. He trains on an almost daily basis. Keeping his body honed to fighting shape, and his reflexes swift.
Goals: To spend his days protecting the Trident, and eventually pass on “Aedival” and his seat among the Trident Guard to a worthy successor.
Wishes: To finish the job his ancestor started, and slay She of the Deep who terrorized the Trident in ages past. However, he finds guarding the Trident more important. It is likely that he would only have the opportunity to do this if She of the Deep attacked the city once more. Or after he retires from guarding.
