Lesbians can transmit STDs to eachother just like anyone else - fluid-to-fluid exchange. Anywhere there's a body fluid - whether that's genital secretion, blood, whatever - and an entrance to the mucus membrane or bloodstream -- you've got risk.
Additionally, lesbians often share toys and if you don't know what other people your partner may have been with in the past, or haven't been tested recently, that's a bad idea. There was a recent case in which one lesbian partner infected the other with HIV despite the fact that they were monogamous, practiced safe sex (including the "no oral sex up to an hour after brushing teeth" rule) etc, just because they didn't use condoms on toys.
