Description I just found out that my Fractal Wasp Troll image was one of the 25 selected for Benoit Mandelbrot Fractal Art Exhibition 2011. www.fractalartcontests.com/201…

He also won fractalforums.com:s annual fractal art contest 2011 for me: www.fractalforums.com/fractalf…

Almost scared myself when he popped out from the DOF in Photoshop... Do not dare to zoom any closer...

As I said before, this is a unrestrained crazy mix of bulbs and boxes but I guess this chaos is needed to create these kind of "real world" organic creatures.

FULL VIEW PLEASE!

Mandelbulb 3D, DOF effects done in Photoshop

3D printed version available in my shop at Shapeways: www.shapeways.com/shops/mandel…

I am happy to announce my first real life 3D fractal art exhibition.
So all of you who happen to pass the city of Karlstad during this period has the chance to see mine and Jérémie:s works as big prints.
The museum has also arranged with a number of natural fractals, a large Sierpinski pyramid, videos and more.
My works at the exhibition:

Basket of bread  - 81x81 cm

Mathematicians framed by their own formulas - 135 x 108 cm

Quantum mechanic clockwork of the cosmic calendar - 108 x 108 cm

Perfectly framed Lacemaker - 80 x 60 cm

Mollusk of Love - 60 x 80 cm

can i ask you something?

Do you have to know elevated maths to create this things?

No problem Néstor, and the answer is no, you do not need to understand the maths.
It takes a lot of patience though, and it helps to have some knowledge of what a mandelbulb, amazing box (mandelbox), menger sponge is, lots of basic info about this in the links in my journal!

I have been painting oils for many years, but my education is technical, and I work with computers on a magazine.
And yours?

Actually, I was wanting to ask, but how are you getting the colour depth with your images? It's really working well.

Do you render with different passes, depth passes etc. Or is fractal rendering a different beast (pun ) from 3D rendering?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MANDELWERK In reply to IndianRose [2011-02-18 20:24:40 +0000 UTC]

This is a hard question to answer, I have no experience in (modern) 3D apps, I did some tries in Maya and Bryce a long time ago, but I think it is a combination of the app you are working with and what you do with the outcome.
I try to check if I have nice highlights and shadows when I do the render (which is essential in all imaging, photo or whatever) if I do not get it 100% right I have the chance to get it better in Photoshop, I work with digital images, and the only way to learn is to study digital images the whole way, colorspaces, RGB to CMYK...
I have to start a FAQ here
Saved this now as my first FAQ...

Do not know what you mean about different passes, the depth is possible to save after the render as the z buffer, I use that a lot, for fog or depth blur.

That is all for now.. good night

IndianRose In reply to MANDELWERK [2011-02-22 15:54:43 +0000 UTC]

I think I've been a little foolish here, I kept thinking that your work was created in a 3D package just because it has so much detail and depth.

Thank you for answering, I'm pretty curious about it all - so I appreciate the information. You should contemplate making a tutorial, it could be quite inriguing for enquiring minds!

Your message reminded me of Bryce. I played around with the software when I was much younger, but I never made anything good with it, I think I was too young to understand it properly!

What a misunderstanding... Sorry Naomi, I think I have been pretty clear, mentioning Mandelbulb 3D and fractals a lot...

I have too little time to make tutorials, but there are some who has done tuts for MB3D, HalTenny here on DA is one of them...

I never got anything out of Bryce either, I forgot to mention Studio Strata Pro, I did some decent renders with that app, must see if I still have them

It took about 6 hours to render (it is a fractal... )

rosshilbert In reply to MANDELWERK [2011-02-07 15:52:54 +0000 UTC]

I'm curious. What image size in pixels do you use to generate an image the size of your DevID? Do you have a printer that big or do you use a print service? What kind of cost do you incur for a print that big?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MANDELWERK In reply to rosshilbert [2011-02-08 08:10:49 +0000 UTC]

Hello Ross, the original image of the Dev ID is 42308 x 23238 pixels.
I used a print service, here is a snippet of an answer I gave on fractalforums:
Sadly the kind of canvas printing I got the chance to get a good price for (Full price about 55 £ per square meter) only uses a resolution of 100 dpi, and my original has pixels enough for this print size (4 x 2 meters) in 300 dpi... even if the rendering technique I had back then has a bit too few details to really be much better than in 100 dpi, I did get som modifications, so now I have made an even bigger, more detailed image of a zoom of the bulb (took about a month to render the parts), now looking for companys that prints 300 dpi

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rosshilbert In reply to MANDELWERK [2011-02-08 14:22:08 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Johan. That is a lot of pixels! With that kind of generation time, deciding which image to generate must be agonizing. The cost seems pretty reasonable though. Good luck with your search.

I was using Subblues Pixelbender script for my original mandelbulbs, it was much quicker than MB3D...
...and I was a bit more whacko @ that time I guess
You did check it out, the final render? [link]

rosshilbert In reply to MANDELWERK [2011-02-08 18:21:55 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you pointed me to that link once before. It is an impressive image and a very nice presentation. I made a few 9,000x9,000 images oversampled at 3x3 (27,000x27,000 sample points) but I was burning up my hardware so I've been sticking with smaller renders lately. But I love those big images!
