A mural I designed for a local community artshow, the canvas is boards that a local restaurant had put up on their windows in preparation for the yearly protests in my city in response to police brutality. I chose a field thistle for the centerpiece because people mistake them for weeds despite them being an important native plant for pollinators and are related to sunflowers. I chose my composition because in a protest 'law inforcement ' often miss identify prominent organizers in the community as weeds they need to pull,so the thistle is also representing the folks who are organizer power houses and subsequently have a target on their backs as a result. The sunflowers in the backing the thistle are red black in green in reference of the Pan African Flag that was brought to us by Marcus Garvey. There's a poem that goes with the flag called "This Flag of Mine" by Amy Jaques Garvey and if you haven't read it,I implore that you do.
