Inspired by "Shape & Form", a truly fascinating fic that has since been taken off the 'net.
Basically, millennia ago on Cybertron, shortly before the War, Ironhide had an encounter with the Key in its natural state of pure energy, which included the Key briefly merging with him before it departed.
After the Battle of Mission City, Ironhide feels a strange connection that draws him to Sunnydale, where he encounters Dawn shortly after she was created. The other Autobots determine that there is some connection to Ironhide, Dawn,a nd that energy ball he encountered, but the fic ends before it can be taken further.
That said, considering that Buffy has a Slayer dream involving Dawn reading an auto magazine and declaring her love to a GMC Topkick (Ironhide's vehicle form), it's not hard to anticipate where this fic was going in one regard...
