The RZ-1FD Fleet Defense A-wing was a response to the high cost of the original A-wing and its variants by the Rebel Alliance who felt that a more cost-effective short-range fleet interceptor may be necessary to counter the massed starfighter attacks of the Empire against Alliance capital ships. By removing the hyperdrive, navigational computer, and multi-aspect tracking systems of the original RZ-1, the RZ-1FD was able to be produced far cheaper than its parent design. This bore with it the obvious downside of limiting the craft's angle of attack to head-on and removing any potential for deep strike capabilities or long-range escort. The RZ-1FD was also changed in terms of armament. Gone were the laser cannons, sensor jammer, and missile launchers.
In their place was either a pair of underslung fire-linked light laser cannons or dumb-fire rocket pods. These systems were modular and could easily be swapped out between one another based on the needs of the fleet. When the first Fleet Defense A-wings were deployed, standard doctrine called for flights of three craft to be deployed. These were composed of two laser equipped RZ-1FDs supporting a single rocket pod equipped RZ-1FD though this varied in practice based on circumstances.
While capable in their assigned role, many commanders disliked the limited role of the RZ-1FD, feeling them strategically superfluous and tactically redundant. Most pilots assigned to the type also disliked them, many expressing concerns that their lack of a hyperdrive limited their ability to move with the rest of the fleet. These concerns were echoed by fleet commanders who expressed worries that without a hyperdrive the Fleet Defense A-wing was more liability than asset. The type's inability to jump with the fleet prevented retreat until they'd either been retrieved or abandoned with their pilots.
These concerns meant that many fleet commanders declined to accept the RZ-1FD and opted instead for X-wings or standard A-wings whenever possible. The Fleet Defense A-wing would see renewed interest and limited success with the rise of the New Republic. The newly formed and growing galactic government found itself in need of short-range escorts for convoy and patrol work where hyperdrive capabilities were not needed. In this role the Fleet Defense A-wing would ride on exterior docking clamps, umbilicals, or whatever hangar facilities were available and be carried through hyperspace to be deployed whenever the convoy or patrol dropped back to realspace.
