"The sere and arid lands of the Shadow Kingdoms have bred a mongrel race as unforgiving as the land. Cruel despots and fanatical cults rule the barren lands with absolute authority, from age–old castles, tottering with decay and ripe with treachery. The great mass of the people are crammed into fortified towns huddled about the castles for protection, always on the edge of starvation. Pity and charity are unknown and old age is a sure sign of ruthless strength. The only travellers in this grey land are warbands or the fierce Volktaar warriors – masterless blades apt for plunder or willing for service to any who will employ them."
