I remembered when I fired a real gun for the first time at a shooting range in Thailand. It was a revolver, with one heck of a kickback. While I missed half my shots, the other half that hit were actually quite good. All the while, I have to deal with an irrational dread over the prospect that somehow I would end up hitting another person or hitting myself. The roar of gunfire at the range made me jump or duck from reflex when we first went in as well.
Thinking back, I can conclude from personal experience that firing a gun is actually both exciting and terrifying, especially for a first timer. These are not toy you buy for kids from a toy store, or virtual guns that you fire in a FPS video game; there is a real sense of power and danger in those things, and in firing those things.Β

Heh, the first gun I fired was a revolver too--at a safety class at my local sherif's gun range. Got some good shots with the thing too: fist-size grouping on the neck and chest of the target (which I still have, on my bedroom wall.)

True story, I fired a shotgun at the range once and apparently I didn't hold it right so the recoil sent the gun slamming into my forehead and gave me a scar.
