I have seen the show and I wouldn't call it "intense".
It's actually for things like that... that cartoons became so bad in the last decade. Because they were trying to be less "intense" and more "kid friendly".
Although now they are becoming good again
Specially the ones from Cartoon Network: Adventure Time, Steven Universe, and my favorite one: Over the Garden Wall!

I think kids can handle most things so long as you throw in a happy ending. Kids are tough.
