In this quote Yang Zhu articulates one of the cornerstones of his hedonistic philosophy. The sage says that rank and possession is of no value if the owner is not the master of his or her own life. Therefore a certain praxis is advised in order to being able to enjoy the fruits of life. Yang Zhu can be regarded as one of the first Daoist sages.
