As they expanded beyond the heavens of their own world, the Lumati found themselves in a universe where chaos reigned. Great, unfathomable works of unimaginably powerful civilizations lay in ruins, entire worlds dead and forgotten, their ruins looted by scavengers and vermin of younger, lesser species. The great old ones, such as they were, had all but faded into legend, their achievements forgotten, their evolution failed.
The Lumati saw these failed societies and understood their mistake: They had allowed the inferior to prevail. As they had grown accustomed to their command of technology, they had stopped striving themselves for absolute excellence, and thus, the old ones had become infested with weakness, slowly rotting away, before collapsing into themselves.
This failure had left the galaxy in ruins, left it to be ruled by those parasitic species incapable of their development. The sight of this disastrous state confirmed all that which the Lumati already believed. For progress to prevail, for the galaxy to be saved, it would have to be cultivated and steered and brought to serve the ideal of the superior.
