Potions making was something Severus was able to freely exert rigid control over, and only this condition allowed him to feel comfortable enough to actually be creative. Typically the idea of being creative scared him. It required impulsivity and letting go, and these were just not Severus’ strongpoints. He’d often been accused of being tightly strung and told he should just let go and relax. People just didn’t understand that he really wasn’t capable of that.

However, when he was alone in the lab, as he preferred to be, he could set up the rigid and ritualistic conditions that allowed him to be experimental and free without paralysing anxiety.
