Description
Lilly Smith is a powerful sorceress and inventor. She has studied many disciplines and schools over her lifetime. One of her strongest abilities is Overcharge. However, to get around its drawbacks and avoid relying on it directly, Lilly created a series of magic power armors, growing more advanced over time. It was also to satisfy her desire as an inventor to develop such things. The Mk 23 Calypso Arcane Exo Armor is Lilly's current go-to power armor. It is one of several, but is built to be a multi-purpose armor, as opposed to her more specialized ones. It also acts as a testbed for new equipment. It has six hard points, two satellite option slots, 20 hammerspace storage slots, two item boxes, and 10 tindra slots. Thanks to the wellspring of transformation, it is able to transform into a belt buckle. When activated, it will form around the wearer, but security protocols prevent this from happening without Lilly's authorization. The suit also has a slot for a voltchu or support A.I. to help run the support systems. It was also developed to work with the Orb of Umbral, provided she's wearing it when invoking the orb.
The undersuit is made of a special composite nanofiber designed to resist swords and bullet fire while also redistricting kinetic energy and mana. A layer of insulation separates the user from the nanofiber. It also channels strength enhancement magic, woven into the fibers. The armor is made up mainly of mythanium alloy to replicate the harness of mythril, but some mythril was also used for certain components. The armor is also protected by a mana skin, covering every inch of it with a damage-reducing aura. The amount of damage reduction can be adjusted, but higher levels requires higher mana usage.
The primary power source is a mana well, a technically limitless source of magic, but with limited output. To compensate, it also has several high density mana capacitors and a pair of aether gills. As Lilly has yet to develop the means to create mana wells and she has only collected so many, she only allocated one for her personal use. As such, when switching between armors, she must remove the mana well and install it in a different armor, which takes some doing. There is also a built-in mana link, but that only works in proximity to Topaz Tower. The 10 tindra slots allow her to embed it with tindra crystals to enhance certain aspects of it, such as strength, speed, mana, etc. However, like the mana well, Lilly is largely unable to produce them and only allocated so many of them for her personal use. The removal process is more cumbersome then of the mana well. It does play into the malleable nature of the armor, altering itself against perpetrators as the mission calls for.
The suit has many built in functions as well, including temperature control. The helmet contains a number of sensors, mental shields, a gorgon filter, and a hair compressor. The eyes are purely cosmetic, allowing Lilly to express emotion while wearing it, or to psych out her opponents by displaying a more terrifying face. The helmet can also be removed or replaced. Like the eyes, the chest has a glamour to change the apparent shape, making it appear more feminine. Special lenses were put into the palms, allowing her to cast spells without interference, although it draws from her own mana pool and eats away at her overcharge. The shoes are enchanted to absorb the impact of her landings and to help ensure she lands on her feet.
One of the main functions is the interchangeable and modular weapons. On each leg is a hammerspace holster, each containing 10 slots normally containing weaponry. Only one slot on each holster can be open at a time. As opposed to the bag of holding, which normally requires the owner to feel around for the desired item, the slots are numbered and she merely needs to call upon the right one, although this comes with a reduced capacity. If needed, only the belt and holsters can transform, granting access to the hammerspace without fully equipping the armor. Additionally, there are two built-in item boxes, hammerspace portals for miscellaneous storage. The hammerspace holsters normally contain an assortment of guns, swords, and other weapons, but sometimes additional ammo. Often they hold some new invention Lilly wishes to field test, but there is also some standard weaponry she also brings with her and specialized equipment for the task at hand. The item boxes will also sometimes contain mini missile launchers, but installing or removing them is a bit complex.
The modular weapon systems are attached to the hard points, one on each arm, two on the back, and one on each leg. While the arm's hard points were originally meant for mid-range weaponry, she will frequently quip a mana barrier generator (pictured) or collapsible shield. The right hard point is switched out more often. Lilly often develops new firearms with a variety of effects, such as petrification and even a grappling hook. Pictured is an arm-mounted railgun, the smallest she ever built. However, its slow rate of fire and low impact coupled with high recoil made it impractical, so she only used it a few times. The legs will sometimes have micro missile pods or boosters equipped, but are sometimes left empty to avoid putting extra weight on the legs, as pictured. The two hard points on the back are often used in tandem, such as attaching a pair of subarms, a flight pack, double cannons, or water jets, but sometimes are split between two different modulator weapons.
The Mk 5 dynamic sub arms (pictured) are Lilly's current favorite back-mounted equipment. It was built with the aid of the wellspring of transformation, allowing it to alter its size. When not in use, they shrink and fold onto the back. Their elbows are protected by their own barrier generators. They have a number of functions, such as built-in weaponry and dedicated strength tindra each. They can be set to slave mode, causing them to mimic the movements of Lilly's arms, or semi-autonomous mode, letting them be controlled by the support A.I. There is also combine mode, transforming around Lilly's arms into a massive pair of arms and allowing the armor's tindra crystals to better aid them. Versions of the dynamic sub arms can also include transformations into wings or long range weaponry, but they aren't as powerful as specialized equipment.
The suit has two slots for satellite options stored in hammerspace. It is possible to have two of the same options equipped, but it's rare for her to do so. Like with the hard points, Lilly would often switch them out. When deployed, they float around the user, each equipped with a short range mana link to the armor. The Mk 2 Gyneth Cannons (pictured) are a pair of twin mana cannons controlled by the support A.I. Each has a miniature mana generator and mana capacitors. The back is made of mythanium with kinetic disinterment enchantment so they can function as shields if need be. A favorite of Lilly's are the speaker orbs (pictured) which play background music during battles. Bard magic is hidden within the sound waves for psy-warfare, indenting to trip up targets. “Sympathy for the Devil” is one of Lilly's favorites and she will typically open with it.
Originally, the Calypso series since the Mk 15 had a slot to allow possession from a yokai, typically a voltchu. It would regulate the suit's systems and enchantments, adjusting the output to each type of enchantment as need be. It would also help manage some of the modular equipment such as sub arms and satellite options. However, after Deana Williams started experimenting with the neuro crystals and developed more complex A.I., this was replaced. The helmet was also updated with a more advanced targeting system.
I was a fan of the '90s Iron Man cartoon when I was a kid. I enjoyed the large number of specialized armors Tony had. While I liked it at the time, I do realize it was kind of cheap for him to be able to switch between them in mid-combat like that. I also enjoyed Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight.
Back in the era of the GameCube, I played Evolution Worlds. The MC had a mechanical third arm on his back that looked like a Swiss army knife, although it didn't deploy anything but the hand and some tools it held. There are also the subarms from Knight's & Magic. More recently there was also Mecha Uda, which had a third arm that could transform. I was going more for that, but it was a bit complex.
I went rather red mage with this armor. It has a wide range of abilities and functions, reflecting Lilly's mad scientist side. Kind of a jill of all trades, able to adapt to a wide range of situations, but isn't all that powerful. At least not compared to some of the stuff out there in Trivium. It is a vehicle for Lilly to test out new weaponry, which is why it has so many holsters, but is also for the rare times when she fights.
