Description
Just a shortie about eyes cause I feel I need to have something to link to when people make this very obvious mistake in retouching eyes. With all other retouching done to the image, the picture on the left shows my eyes with the iris unretouched (I think the whole eye is a bit brightened though). The example might not be the best since the highlight on the eye is very well placed to begin with. If it is in the middle of the pupil I would suggest moving it, but here it looks very good to begin with.
Alternative 1 is the worst kind of retouching. It is a simple hue/saturation-layer with the opacity somewhat lowered. The eyes aren't more beautiful and they look kinda fake.
Alternative 2 is the way to go. The outside of the iris is darkened while the inside is lightened to make it look more dynamic. The saturation is somewhat higher and I have sharpened the eye alone. This makes the eye look much better and still natural.
This was very brief and there are lots of other things you could do, but it covers the most blatant and common mistake I have seen.
The example is from this image [link]
