"That would never suit his grace!"And now folks, here's the engine known as "the hero of all engines"... that never appeared after season 4 (not counting stock footage in the episode "Harold and the flying horse") and got replaced by Fearless Freddie in season 10 to 12. He got buried underground for who knows how long, he saved Sir Handel (then named Falcon) from nearly falling from a cliff and tricked Stuart when he managed to push him forward with all the steam he had left and arrived at the top station. It's Duke (also known as "Granpuff" by Peter Sam).
On a side note, while the title to the oldest engine on Sodor actually goes to Skarloey, I think Duke fits the "cool old grandpa" trope better.
