I love the sense of scale those birds give to the robot. I can't tell if he's sad or just daydreaming, and I'm glad of that - mysteries are good. I wonder what he's thinking. Excellent work.

Amazing work. I love the detail in this piece. I feel he is contemplating going for a swim.

so is this photoshop or painter? i can never tell with your work lol. The natural look of the brushstrokes tell me painter, while something else tells me photoshop....?

how the.....how do you get those natural looking textures? im assuming its all in the brush dynamics?

MattDixon In reply to HoustonSharp [2011-05-16 19:59:36 +0000 UTC]
I think it's a combination of things. Brush settings, trying to avoid using any tools or effects that have an obvious digital look like smoothing or airbrushes and working on a single layer. Texture builds up very quickly if you paint over your mistakes instead of using undo, and you resist the urge to smooth things out.

Meant to ask at hte weekend - do you use a hard edged brush or one of the rough edged ones?

MattDixon In reply to WavingMonsterStudios [2011-05-16 22:01:01 +0000 UTC]
Hard edged for almost everything. They're my own brushes, made from scans of real paint marks, but the shapes I use for 90% of the painting are almost identical to the 'stipple dense' tips in the default 'Natural Brushes' set.

Ooh, don't know that i know 'stipple dense'! I must have it somewhere. I've been using one of the free brushes i got from imagineFX in 'character brushes' - which i think was in a marta dahlig tutorial once.

Why do I get the feeling that every single part of him has been replaced many times, yet he still has this dull ache in all the diodes down his left side?

Killer work on the lighting and texture here--I love his pose, too. Looks like a robotic introvert indeed.
