Description Star Trek has a hit movie and Star Wars has a crappy TV show... has the world gone topsy turvy?!

My thoughts on the new Trek Movie - it was awesome. Exceeded all my expectations, a great movie. But there is also sadness, since this movie also burns 40+ years of Trek history that I love. YES, the movie gives fans the bone that it's an alternative timeline and not actually changing history, but that doesn't matter. The Classic Trek universe (TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY) is dead. Paramount won't be going back to it. Imagine for all you comic fans, if they had cancelled the classic Marvel Universe when they came up with Ultimate Spider-man. Ultimate Spidey is great but...I grew up with classic Marvel U and I love it, even though lately it has gotten pretty sucky.

So while this is a great movie, I will still miss the real Star Trek. The movie's not without flaws of course... Nimoy felt to me to give the weakest performance of the cast, or of his career....Uhura was a totally useless character who added nothing to the movie...and overall it was all action with no real substance or meaning. But it was so good and so much fun I can look past the problems.

Go see it if you haven't!

GASP* I never had it put that way before! If the original spidey universe were to die..idk what I would do! I can empathize a bit now, but I never was a huge star trek fan.

Love this piece. The movie was awesome too. I like Star Wars but Trek has always been the better of the two. Being a fan of the shows (though DS9 was kinda weak), I do love the movie nevertheless. Making it an alternate universe seems like an easy way out but at least they took it. Imagine how much worse it would have been if they just said "this is the way its going to be and damn the rest of the franchise". Also, the new Chekov really nailed the accent.

first, this pic is simply fantastic. i particularly love how you managed to give vader that worried, sad look in his helmet eyes. it made me laugh.

second, totally agree with you about nimoy's disappointing presence in the new film. it just felt like a grab for the older audience to have him there - which, it probably was to a certain extent - but he's an outstanding actor and i would've loved to see him do a little more with it.

third, i disagree about uhura, but i'm not going to step on your toes here i just think she added some depth to kirk and spock's characters through their interactions with her.

and finally, my hierarchy:
DS9
TNG
Voyager
Original
Enterprise

my fav film is the Voyage Home because i was just a wee lass when i saw it and i loved the whales! the nostalgia factor has always outweighed the fact that it's just not the greatest film. otherwise, i love First Contact.

thanks for your art

It was good, it just wasn't great. Mine would have to be:

Next Gen
Original
Enterprise
Voyager
Deep Space 9

What are your feelings on the movies? Do you believe in the odds/evens curse?

I'm not quite nailed the two franchises, but I like both (I grew up watching the series and the movies of Star Trek and Star Wars), while giving me moments of entertainment and fun all this good for me, of course, the illustration this fun and well done, greetings and luck.

Your description...it's my thoughts EXACTLY.

They haven't revived Trek...just changed it. The Trek we loved is still going to die out, and something else is taking it's place. :c The convention this year was FULL of new movie fans. Somebody asked something about the Spock/Uhura relationship *gack* and everybody applauded...

They practically said in the movie it wasn't canon, and yet, everyone else seems to consider it canon. Bagh.

I did love the movie, but yeah...it's not actual Trek at all :/

This comic is great though XD I hadn't thought of it that way. And you know what's even more disturbing? A lot of the Star Wars fans are saying they like Star Trek now! Hell has frozen over...

I adooooored the new Trek movie, adored it. x3
My mother has been a fan since the first episode aired back in 1966, she was enthralled with the new movie as well- gave it a nice juice up of life. I guess it all comes down to personal preference. I loved Nimoy in the new movie, but I'm with you on Uhura... what was up with that, man?

Spock rocks .

As I have been involved in the old Star Trek vs Star Wars debate since the mid 90's, I can point out a few things;
Star Trek was in need of newer and better stories, the show had got trapped in a rut where every new show was a clone of the show that came before it. They never tried anything new or really edgy, the movies which were made by Berman & Braga (the dreaded B&B) were suffering from what I called Khan envy, every new movie needed to find a Khan-worthy villan for Picard and failed miserably because of it story-wise.
Star Wars suffers from one thing and it's in the main tital, WAR. The show has never been about anything else, it's just one big ongoing neverending war. There is barely enough room for telling any other kind of story, one without all of the conflict. As such we only ever see the galaxy at war all of the time (I am including the expanded universe in this as well), the clone wars of the prequals never really ends, it just turns into the galactic civil war from the original trilogy. And if you know the expanded universe material, that war does'nt end for another 25 years after the original trilogy before another war begins immediatly after, sucks to be Luke Skywalker.
I dont mind that the new movie changes the star trek timeline, that was needed in order to avoid the continuity flaws that us die-hard trekkies would see, even now there are plenty of trekkies who are pointing out the flaws of this movie and complaining about the changes to the timeline, get over it. This film has breathed new life into a franchise that was no longer attracting new fans because it's stories were uninteresting (Enterprise). As for star wars, the clone wars series is fun but what exactly is it all about? Its nothing more than mindless action, fun but pointless, nothing wrong with that but at least star trek has mostly been about something if only about exploring what it means to be human.

I thought it was a really good movie, but I didn't think it felt like Star Trek enough... It lacked the feeling of some of the other movies and series, in my opinion. The special effects, acting, and basically the whole lot ('cept maybe the villian) were all really good, but it didn't feel right. Do get what I'm saying?

But I love this piece nonetheless... Though I DO sorely miss my DS9! It used to be on Spike TV, since I was like... a newborn back in '93 when the series started. I got into it a couple years back.

I'll still get the movie when it comes out on DVD, and I love that it's repopularized the franchise. Maybe like with "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight", the sequel in 2011/2012 will be better than the movie we saw in May. :3

Okay.
The old Star Trek was awesome. I agree. However, I thought the new movie was frickin' awesome as well. I thought it was very well done. And (SPOILERS COMING, THOSE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE IGNORE ME) even though there were about 2 flaws (Spock/Ohura thing did upset me...), it left the door open for the crew to go back in time and fix what was changed. And you know they'll need to. Since they all ended up like they were in the series (for the most part) Kahn will be in the picture eventually. And in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn, somebody died. Well, in the new movie, this person's mother dies. But she was supposed to be the one who restored this person's human feelings and such when he was "brought back" in Star Trek II. So we know they have to go back and fix everything, for his sake. At least...they better. I even heard they were thinking of using the character of Kahn for the next movie (which would actually suck...Star Trek II is too good and classic to be remade). They can't just start the whole series over again; they'd have a frickin' mob on their hands! A mob of us Trekies! But if they end up remaking the series...well...I'll definitely be in that angry mob.
Sorry for the ramble, but my point is that you shouldn't be so disappointed over the movie, because new things can happen in the next one that will somehow clarify everything. Not to mention the amazing acting.
And I thought Nimoy in the movie made it better...having more of a sense for the past. I was also impressed by new Spock. Bones was AMAZING. Lol.
Sorry for wasting your time...I do tend to talk alot when it comes to something I love.
And I laughed when I saw that picture by the way!

Wait, did they confirm not going back to the prime universe? 'cause to jump back to your Marvel example, they pulled the alternative timeline thing there before, while keeping the original timeline intact.

And I don't recall where, but I do know that there's been several fictional scenarios in which a change in the timeline meant the two would continue seperate from eachother. Meaning the Prime universe still exists as a parallel universe.

MattMoylan In reply to Urya [2009-06-17 19:58:53 +0000 UTC]

Calling it an alternate timeline is jsut so fans would freak out and have a heart attack. They absolutely have not plan to go back to original trek. I don't see whyt hey would with the movie being so successful. Just like how Battlestar would never go back to the original version either.

I can imagine them going the traditional way and introducing yet another crew in the prime universe, for a TV show. Would also be a (well, less) confusing way to produce something for TV while maintaining the movies.

Going back in time and changing what happened does not mean that what had happened in your life previously did not happen.

personally I think that the movie is absolutely amazing . So far I have seen it twice in the theaters.

i do agree about the new Star Wars TV show. i think that they break the Jedi code at least once in every episode. for example, Anikin can not have an apprentice because he is still an apprentice him self during that time period. i could go on about this for a long time and I have already written a really long comment.

sory for the long comment. Star Trek and Star Wars Rock!!!!

But other than Uhura I thought the rest of the movie was completely amazing! I just love the actors who played Kirk and Spock, they did great together!

Oh and I didn't forget about the awesome artwork, don't worry. ^-^ I absolutely love what you did there, and it's true the way Star Trek is totally kicking Star Wars' butt right now. Star Wars really needs to get in gear and stop making that useless cartoon! Star Trek totally pwns!! XD
