The best I can gather is applejack experienced a lose of a good singular friend and she feels responsible for it. There's a lot of room for error to this thinking, will just have to wait and see.

family is an interesting theory to go on,
hense how family is the first set of friends anyone meets.
the trees being her friends mite border on the desterbingly isolated.
from what we know applejack is very reserved in interacting with others, and she was later shown in an apple orchard singing next to a tree with a black ribbon tied to it.
we can postulate endless theories on what mite be until what is can be seen, but lets just wait and see mauroz's work speak for itself.

now this is good. With every chapter I read of this, I can almost see the perfect storyline for a full size anime episode.
