Well, she is Gatomon in the dub...because the dubbers thought she was a boy. You see Gato = male cat.

Gato can mean "cat" in general. It depends on the relevancy on knowing the gender. Otherwise, it's "el gato" by default, which is probably what the dubbers were going for. In all honesty, because they're digital programs, genders are probably arbitrary and don't matter all that much.

That, I did not know. *shrug* It probably still doesn't matter that much. Gatomon is pretty much part of many people's childhood vocabulary and it's still a touch more imaginative than her Japanese name.
