Okay, so, Rex went through a bunch of crap in the remake. He thought he watched his parents die and joined the Dark Pterosaur just to bring them back.
After he gets out of the Akuno, he has a hard time dealing with his grief, but Alice, who feels the same grief for her father's death, is always there to reassure him. He slowly settles all the conflicts he caused under the Akuno's influence.
At the end, he finds out that his parents are still alive, however, they agree that it'd be better if Rex stayed in the present instead.
