The name holotropic suggests something that might come as a surprise to the average person—that in our everyday state of consciousness, we use only a small fraction of our perceptual and experiential potential and are not aware of the full extent of our being. Holotropic states of consciousness have the potential to help us—to use the terms of the British-American philosopher and writer Alan Watts—to break the “taboo against knowing who we are” and realize that we are not “skin-encapsulated egos” and that, in the last analysis, we are commensurate with the cosmic creative principle itself.
