I don't actually care much about what marks it will get, more important thing is that how well this improves my portfolio as I'm looking for a job. Though the grades haven't been very poor either lately

Oh, I see. We had a little bit of programming even in our 3D-visualisation programme I'm studying in. It was somewhat fascinating. To see a working result out of something weird stuff you just wrote in some editor.

thank you very much
At first there was no intention to put that fish in there, but as I was looking a good reference for the roof-fish-mobile-type-of-thing I found such a fun plastic fish -picture and I thought that what the hell, on the sofa you go, my fishie

This captured my eyes right away! It's the same humor I use for my works, but thanks to 3D technology this is so real! When comparing this version to the first version, I must say, that warming the colors was a good idea. However, the second picture didn't give the feeling of a beach cafe, more of an old folks living room. If you didn't mention the beach, I would not even have noticed it. The first picture definitely says "beach".....it's less cluttered and just as effective. I like both of them equally, but which one do I favorite? I haved to pick one....

Omg, I just love your work! You just got yourself another +watcher my gal.
Most I like the the surreal and humorous feeling in your works, and in art in general also.
And about the Beach Cafe... yeah, that's the main problem with the image. You can't really see any beach in it... or even a cafe. It sure could have been better, but ahm... I'm okay with it. The main idea at the beginning of this project, however, was to have absolutely small cafe table and dozens of chairs, stools and sofas around it and everyone have laid their cups and plates on it... and a couple of those couldn't even fit on the table and have been dropped on the floor. That would've been like "a cafe with shortage of tables" -type of piece - - -- But I didn't quite achieve that feeling. And that bugs me a bit. Maybe someday I redo the piece. dunno...
Thank you very much for the comment. Always warms my heart to hear something like that ^_^

No, don't change the image! It doesn't have to be a cafe, could Mr. Fish's living room as well... actually that's what I first thought
I sometimes start working on an idea and in the middle of the project I get a better idea, and then the illustration ends up completely different, but much better than expected and originally planned.
Can you tell me what software you are using to create those 3D works?

maxon In reply to illufox [2006-03-22 07:02:43 +0000 UTC]
Hehe, thanks for the comment.
Well, you are right - sometimes images tend to get better by accident
Software I used:
3Ds: 3ds Max 8 with mental ray, vray and scanline renderers
2D(postprosessing): Photoshop CS2
Check the bottom of this thread to see the outcome of 3D-stuff - everything else was then painted over them after they were mixed: [link]

Damn nice work! How exactly did you create the scene? Did you use a 3d modelling program to build the scene, then paint it in photoshop, or was it all digitally painted from the start? To me, it looks as if some of it is modelled and some of it painted, which I think is a great combination. Looks very nice anyway, especially the fish on the couch!

maxon In reply to Thundax [2006-03-17 13:46:26 +0000 UTC]
Thank you for the comment
Yeap, that's exactly how it's done.
First modelled in 3ds max 8. Then rendered with mental ray, then with scanline to make the shadows, and then with vray for some reflections. Then all those were combined and tweaked and painted over in Photoshop.

you did it all in 3d, not 2d postprocessing? think it was worth it. surprisingly huge difference imo.

maxon In reply to ixaarii [2006-03-18 10:21:40 +0000 UTC]
Sorry, but of course almost everything is post prosessing. In the bottom of this page ( [link] ) you'll see the images that were only in 3D. Everything else is painted.

aa!! cool!! thanks for sharing. (me feeling encouraged... i hate texturing, i love painting, so using recently this "cheat" of modelling and then doing the rest in postprocessing, encouraging seeing a skilled master like yourself use this.) superb painting!

maxon In reply to ixaarii [2006-03-19 09:02:16 +0000 UTC]
Hehe, thanks.
I feel the same with texturing, it never goes the way you would like it to go. There's always some freaking seams and stretches somewhere or it just looks crappy. That's why painting sure is fun, you get exactly what you want.

ixaarii In reply to maxon [2006-03-19 10:36:49 +0000 UTC]
plus the end result seems much more natural & man-made as oposed to artificial/rigid looking. Wish I knew of 3d painting software something of the likes of painting zbrush (the color, not only the geometry) but with suport for all 3d, unlike zbrush

I really do like 3d-things that aren't recognized as 3d-things and hope to accomplish that somewhat.
