American Civil war reenactors portraying the 14th Brooklyn at the battle of Gettysburg. the 14th New York State Militia was mustered into Federal service and re-designated the 8th N.Y. Volunteer Infantry, but it was known by friend and foe as "the 14th Brooklyn." The uniform was adopted in 1860 while a Militia unit and they continued to wear it proudly for the War and afterwards when they returned to State duty.
