Hm... i wonder who could be trying to load a save file. Flowey would already know he doesn't have that power anymore, pluss he seems to be preparing for something, so he's out.
Chara is currently dead, giving them a motive for trying to CONTINUE from their last save, and they would be too stubborn to consider the possibility of them no longer being in control of the timelines, so they're a likely possibility.
This world's Frisk might be trying to reset so they can save Asgore and Alphys, who they believe to be dead, and it would also explain why they didn't notice they were walking right into Sans' fist, so they're also a likely possibility.

The thing with au's is anything is possible. What is true in one doesn't necessarily hold true for another. Like with Frisk/Chara, there are au's like aftertale that say Frisk chose genocide, then there are others like Judgement Hall where Frisk was possessed by Chara. It would be interesting if Gaster had the ability to mess with files. I haven't seen that before, so I'm curious to see if you're right.

Is there really a difference? My headcanon is that Frisk is being possessed by Chara the entire time, which is why we get to choose their name. At the end of a true pacifist ending, Chara decides to relinquish control. Ao we aren't actually controlling Frisk; we're controlling Chara controlling Frisk.

Keep in mind that every au is different. Some are based off a reality where Frisk chose Genocide, others have Frisk possessed by Chara. 'The player' may come into this au or they may be absent.
Au's are au's, other people's art. So however they choose to define Frisk/Chara/Player is their choice.
