Somehow, this reminds me of Jon Lajoie's dance moves in "Show Me Your Genitals". Haha.

I definitely wanted it to be reality, but everything pointed otherwise. It was a dream.

I Agree, we all likes happy endings, but most people just tries to lie to them self and pretend its reality and try to get around all these evidence.

My theory: there can be multiple explanations, REALITY IS NOT ONE!
the totem at the end balance, doesn't matter if it wobble at first, once it balance it means it is not reality. In reality it never balance, because it is weighted.

die in limbo DOES NOT wake you UP, you just fall into deeper limbo with faster clock.
it is the falling of fall that wakes you up, both in reality and dream.
we all had the experience of dreaming falling and wake up with heavy breath.
also, the sedative only prevent you from waking up by the fear of dyeing, you can still wake up by the feeling of falling, both in real life and dream.
Always remember time are DIFFERENT IN DREAMS AND LIMBO.

theory 1: The MOVIE starts in reality, everyone wake up alive, COBB and saito fall in to LIMBO. Saito aged, because he went into LIMBO some minute before CObb, which in limbo it would be years or decades. Cobb went in LIMBO, dream about saito, dream about went back home seeing his children. Mission Failed[link]

evidence: Totem suggest the end was a dream. We did see how cobb wake up and others takes the machine away. JUst like a dream, we never remember how it begin. we just start in the middle.

Theory two: Cobb, a normal man who miss his past away wife, went on a first class flight. sleeps in the flight, dreams the whole story, the whole setting about limbo, totem, and such are not true, it just his dream. He them wake up in the plane finish his trip. He did not talk to his team mate, even after Fischer was away.(theory was least likely.)

objection: Saito made the Call after wake up. (it could be something like deja vo)

theory 3([link] favorite, even a better ending)Mal was RIGHT!!! [link] and mal went in limbo, wake up in dream, mal kills herself and wake in reality. Cobb still in dream and think is reality. Cobb dreams the whole mission only to tell him self this is reality , forgot the truth he once know, this could also be a dream, Mal's dream.

evidence: the totem belong to Mal, It does not tell cobb whether he is in dream or not. Cobb does not have a true totem.

I challenge that notion.

[SPOILER WARNING! JUST GO SEE THE DANG MOVIE.]

My evidence:

1. The big one: The top wobbles, then corrects itself slightly. In dreams, there was never any movement that drastic. It just kept on spinning.

2. Whilst dreaming, Cobb never saw the faces of his children. In the end, he does.

3. Projections only briefly interact with the dreamer, with the exception of Mal, someone who was extremely close to Cobb. The team is shown acknowledging Cobb, and Miles even talks to him.

3a. Besides, projections are usually just random people, again with the exception of people close to the dreamer. Why, then, would Saito and Fischer show up?

[END OF SPOILERS]

Your move.

I would also like to add to #1 (spoiler) that the totems are meant to be a symbolization that you are not trapped within someone ELSE'S dream, because there is something about your totem that is different as any other regular things. This would have been Cobb's dream, and he knows how his totem works. Probable.

one more thing on that. totem only behave one way and one way only, that is, it only wobbles, NEVER CORRECT it self in reality. however in dream, any behavior is possible!, it depend on the dreamer. Once we see the totem balanced, we know indeed that it is a dream, because the totem is weighted on one side so that it wobbles in reality.

Also, even if the totem wobbles just like it would in reality, you still can not be sure your are not in dream.
1. you can be the dreamer
2. the dreamer can steal your totem, and figure out is property, build a totem with the same property in his dream
3. the totem original belong to Mal, this could just be Mal's dream.

remember on cobb's first mission? when saito figure out the carpet was fake?
that carpet was kind of like a totem, the dreamer failed to build the carpet with property that saito knows.
if the dreamer failed to build the totem (with special property)of the target, the target will notice the difference and figure out it is a dream,
IF the dreamer find out the special property of the totem while the target still trust the totem, The dreamer can trick the target that the dream is reality.

be aware that dreamer and target can be the same person, dreamer is the part of the brain the build the world. target is the part of the brain that sees the world. If one can not cut through the circle, he won't notice he is dreaming, and thinks its reality.

-Spoilers also, Warning-

1. Yes, the top did wobble, but it never showed it actually stopping. Though you never know - you could be correct.

2. Though he never faced his children as shown, I'm sure he has a recollection of what they look like.. what father wouldn't? Also, the children had the exact same clothes as they did in his memories all throughout the movie and they did not age, though it was a short time.

3. This only shows he was close to everyone, and maybe since he was so far into limbo that everything was just as he wanted; maybe they were made up. Why was his father randomly there? Maybe he'd known about their job, but it was strange, to me.

4. They never showed him waking from the other dream with the van in the water. From what I believe, he drowned in that dream, making him lose it into a deeper limbo which might have just been a long, good dream.

Good points. I offer some more:

[YEAH, IF YOU'RE READING THIS FAR YOU PROBABLY ALREADY KNOW THERE'LL BE SPOILERS...]

In response to 2:

Yes, it is safe to assume that he remembers his childrens' faces. Again, though, we never see them until the end. I think this is significant. If he wanted to see their faces, he would dream of them turning around.

4:

I'll concede that he was never shown waking up with the others. However, remember when he and Mal escape from limbo the first time. They are hit by the train, then wake up in the real world, transcending all the previous dream layers. I.E, death in limbo gives you a no-stop ticket back to reality.

EmberRemedy In reply to J2571 [2010-08-13 02:28:22 +0000 UTC]

2. Still, they had the same clothes and did not age, though they sounded relatively older in the phone call in the beginning of the movie. Who knows how long Mal had been dead up until the start of the movie?

4. That is true and a probable statement. It never showed him actually dying though, and what if the sedation Yusuf gave was too strong for him to wake up still? That's the reason why they went to limbo in the first place - the sedation.

J2571 In reply to EmberRemedy [2010-08-13 22:25:02 +0000 UTC]

4. No, it didn't explicitly show them dying, but that was heavily implied. Also, the intense sedation was only responsible for entering limbo through death. Mal and Cobb reached it first by just going too deep using normal sedatives.

(Finally, I can vent my theories...)

Maybe, since he got so many Kicks at the same time, he ended at the real world.
Besides, I read somewhere that in the real world, he doesn't have his ring on. And he does while asleep. I think he doesn't have it on his finger at the end.
