..the Back of Bourke.Back o' Bourke is a an expression that means...out in the middle of no where, or waaay out in the bush.
Santa is just starting his long night of deliveries, one of his first stops is the house of a little boy out in the bush. His route is charted on his map, but Santa's taken a bit of a wrong turn. Like most men, he doesn't really want to ask directions, but after passing the same gum tree 3 times, the reindeer are ready to mutiny.
"Please, Santa...stop and ask directions, or our schedule will be shot!"
So, reluctantly, Santa agrees to stop and get directions from those who know the area best--the natives.
Turns out it's a good thing he did. He's way off course.
I kept imagining the kangaroo saying "Sorry, mate, yer waaay over here..."
I'm tempted to call this "Real Men Ask Directions".
If your partner is one of those people who hates asking directions, you'll understand why that makes me smile

The furry animal by the lizard is a wombat, they're really sweet I think. The big birds are emus, kind of like a smaller Aussie version of an ostrich

I love these creatures. You know, I'd be curious to if a guy in a red coat with reindeer came. I have to admit, reindeer bums are cute. Did I really just say that?

LOL I think you're right...well, with the foreshortening in the painting I guess it's still pretty close *preens then laughs at self*
I kind of like the challenge of painting something from an angle I don't have reference for, it's fun

True, but polar bears can rip you up/eat you if they get angry. Wombats.. bite, probably. And bash things.
Yeah, they are so adorable! When I was at, um, the Australia Zoo, there was a youngish keeper, and she walked into their enclosure, and this one bounded up and jumped in her lap. It was so cute, I totally wanted to be her.

I don't often work with a story in mind, but the idea came before the painting. Which was nice in a way, the initial drawing was pretty much exactly what I painted
