Dayton should have known something was up. It was far too quiet in the huge house, that usually bustled with activity. Surely it wasn’t a surprise party. Cordovan had passed by him in the early hours and wished him a happy birthday, and his brother Quacey had made some snarky comment about how glad he was to have a brother like him. It had been almost as soon as Dayton woke, so he didn’t remember all of it. But he was sure he’d hear more later.
“Guys?” The brown-furred collie called up the stairs, but there was no response. Slightly disappointed - no, more than slightly, although he would hate to admit it, Dayton headed into one of the larger rooms where the characters usually met up just to talk. Nobody was there; an eerie silence filled that room as well.
Then he thought back to something Cordovan had muttered under his breath as he had walked away. “Watch out for Blitz today…” Or something like that, wasn’t it? What on Earth did that mean? Was the German Shepherd in another bad mood today, or…
He was dragged away from the thought by the sound of rustling. Dayton gazed over at the larger couch, thinking the sound had come from there, but didn’t see anything particularly unusual… ‘Probably just getting worked up over nothing, stop that!’ The collie scolded himself, shaking his head clear. ‘I hope...’
Another noise. This time, Dayton knew he hadn’t imagined it. Swinging his head around, the brown-furred collie swore he caught sight of a black blur moving through the shadowy corners of the huge library room. Dayton flinched and tried to push away his nervousness. “It’s not like I’m alone here, anyway!” He yelled, his voice echoing off the walls.
“No, you’re not.” The answer made Dayton jump and look around. Was that Blitz’s voice? He knew he wasn’t hearing things now, so someone else must be in the library listening. Dayton instantly regretted voicing his thoughts to whoever might be there.
Suddenly, he was swung off his feet by a huge weight leaping into him.
Dayton tumbled, falling onto his side. At least the carpet cushioned his fall (sort of), so it didn’t hurt as much as the collie was bracing himself for. Once he opened his dark green eyes, he was met with Blitz staring him down. Her face was halfway between a smirk and a troubled attempt at hiding laughter.
A frown crossed Dayton’s. “What was that all abou-” he tried to stand up, but the other dog put a paw on him, which was surprisingly strong. He shot an unsure look at Blitz, who leaned down, letting her head rest a few inches from his.
“Happy birthday, then. I had a surprise for you.”
Dayton felt his stomach tighten uncertainly. The German Shepherd lifted her other paw, and… started tickling him. The collie let out a yelp, which quickly turned into a giggle and finally full-blown laughter. Blitz began to laugh with him, and the sound echoed off the walls of the room and filled it with the happy sound.
Of course, Dayton was a little less than happy about this. “S-stop it-t!” He begged, although the effect was rather lost on his shaking voice and watering eyes. “Who t-told y-you?”
“What, that you were ticklish?” Blitz chuckled, still gently running her paws along Dayton’s side. “Your brother, of course, who else?” She threw a knowing look at the doorway, where said canine was standing, beside Cordovan. The yellow-and-black collie smiled at his laughing brother, while the husky beside him blushed and muttered at the sight of Blitz.
“Well,” Dayton managed between gasps and chuckles, “tell h-him as soon as I fig… figure out how to fight you o-off, I’m g-going to-” he didn’t even have to finish before Quacey took off running. A little lost by the sudden happenings, Cordovan rushed off after him.
Blitz backed away, allowing Dayton to finally take a huge breath and shake himself out. “Wanna tag-team it?” Blitz smirked.
“You get Cordovan and I’ll get Quacey. I think all three of you were behind this, but I’ll deal with you later.” Dayton answered.
