He's really a cool character, he's like a General for robots that actually is mostly robot himself. Do the books explain more about Greivous and his background? The movie just kinda plops him in without any mention of him in any previous one. My biggest question is what creature was he before getting robo-tized and why was he robo-tized?

Well, to start off, Grievous was of the Kaleesh, a reptilian species hailing from a mostly barren world. When his homeworld was plunged into a war with the invading insectoid Huks, Grievous became known early on for his ferocity in battle and leadership skill. Well, seeing as the Huk had Republic backing, Jedi were sent and put down the Kaleesh's war. This is where Grievous' hatred for Jedi comes from.
Eventually, representatives from what would become the Confederacy agreed to help his planet out in exchange for his services. A secret bomb was planeted on Grievous's shuttle and the resulting explosion mutilated him horribly. Being told that it was the Republic that tried to assassinate him, Grievous agreed to be reborn as a cyborg to get his share of revenge and then some.

Yes, exactly. Grievous wasn't on good terms with the Republic before hand and this was the last straw. He wasn't even that badly damaged to the extent of being put into a robot body, but while he was unconscious, confederate doctors picked him apart so he'd have no other choice other than to serve the Seperatists or die...
