She stared down at her hands in thought, eyes pressed towards the horizon. It was like time had never passed, yesterday so vivid in her mind. The screaming, the cries of outrage from her mother so...

Stop it, she thought. This kind of thinking will not get you anywhere.  She didn't want to force herself to remember the past. She turned her head skyward and focused on the breeze in the clouds, sending fluff scattering across the blue. How beautiful, she thought. The sky seems unaffected by my turmoil. I love it. If only the rest of the world could be as beautiful, perhaps it would be easier. It would be easier if she had anything to distract her, music, another language, trees, moisture, anything. The desert is so dry and brown, sometimes it's hard to remember anything else.
