Description finally, something that turned out how i wanted it to! it took a few go-rounds with different coloring schemes though. but in the end it turned out alright, and i got maeve stand out against the background how i wanted. the sketch began just as a figure study of sorts, and then when i had the opportunity to bunny hop on various friends computers i thought i might as well make something of it. scanned it big, worked pretty quickly (to go along with my new-found devotion to working faster.). i was glad i was using friends computers, seeing as how my computer doesnt do well with large images.

thanks for looking!

It's a great drawing, interesting use of composition for space and the colouring style is awesome, but as 'sfmoe' noticed, the only problem is the foreshortening on her legs, but he failed to mention how to fix it.

A good way that can fix that problem, if you want to, is to either change the position of the legs to a pose totally different or an easier way is to just change the way you shaded them. A mixture of two tone shading can create depth and a better illusion to creating the foreshortening from the hip to the knee. That would make the knee look 3 dimentional as though it is sticking out of the page.

If you want to change the position of the legs, try asking someone to pose their legs in that position to get a better idea how to foreshorten them.

It's a difficult pose to draw out of your head, and most of my collegues make the same mistake. It not an uncommon problem, but a little referencing can go a long way

You don't have to bother about what I've said if you don't wish to change anything, I just thought I'd point it out, unless of course you've noticed it already.

The lower right corner bothers me... I feel like her foot should be finished. But I love the rest of it, the colour and the linework.

Stylish and artistic. I like it a lot. I agree with mijka, that the lighting source is impossible to locate. It's a sexy pose those and you made her stand out nicely from the slightly sharper BG you drew. Thanks for sharing your work!

mijka [2005-01-19 14:22:09 +0000 UTC]

rather apparently, the original was larger. hrm. On the other hand, I'm patentedly unsure as to the lightsource you used.

That aside, though, I also really dig it. I'm tempted to turn it into some sort of minimalist bg schema or something. You know, lots of white and a strategically poisitioned drawing, like a window into another world. If I get off my arse and do it, I'll drop a link when I post it

*luff*

This so great. The colors and subtle shading are wonderful. I really like her mild shinyness - is that a word?

Very smooth and very well done. It's always a pleasure viewing your work. Keep it up...please.

love it! but the perspective on her legs looks a little awkward.. like her knees should be larger than they are- its not foreshortened properly? I dunno, it's hard to explain. but everything else is perfect. Love your color scheme and the delicacy of your linework.

Grr. sorry about that I dont know why it did that. First it was supposed to be Also I wanted to say that you probably handled the forshortening far better than I ever could though I'd say the way the shading on her right leg (or the viewers left) is done is working against the forshortened effect.

pixel-putty [2005-01-18 21:41:31 +0000 UTC]

I love the colors and line quality. The pose and anatomy of the character remind me of J. Scott Campbell's work. I have one critisizm though, the legs look too short. I realize you've probably tried to forshorten the legs, however it looks as though you may have drawn the top half first and ran out of room for the bottom half. Maybe it's just me. I dunno. everyone else seems to think it's flawless.
