Description
I finished this instead of reading The Princess and the Goblin, sometime back at the beginning of the week
I have to sacrifice school work in order to draw a little, and weekends are for commissions :'< hnnn....Anyways, I drew her (the design) at uni when I was waiting for film theories class to start. I wanted a character with orange eyes... and I've always wanted a cute flat loli oc too, ahahah... I was also inspired by Melissa, thus the pumpkins. I just love drawing pumpkins ;3; pumpkin pants!
She's a goat girl too~
I actually wanted to experiment with shading, but as you can see, I messed up quite a bit. Due to the intense light source, there should be a decent amount of shading on her skin, but when I tried it, it looked so bad that I erased it and left it as it was. So no fancy shading
I used a ref for the lantern : [link] I found it on google |D but the drawing still looks pretty bad. maybe next time.

Ahh, there's actually no secret behind it xD
For the chequered background, I used brushes, I wish I could find it for you, but I think if you write "chequer brush" into the dA search tab, it'll give some results that you can use. I also rotated it slightly 
As you said, most people use textures for these kind of bgs, but I usually either can't find any that I'm looking for, or I just simply can't use it, haha~
So brushes are nice alternatives when you can't use textures.

Awww her design is so adorable! But that is to be expected from the great Chiis, who never fails at making the most adorable OCs ever. <33 I really like this experimental style, it looks very "paintish" (I am god awful at words and describing, sorry...but I hope you know what I mean. XD) She looks like she could be a mascot for Halloween or something. <333

I love the serious look on her face. Looks like she really is serious about her duty, which makes her even cuter (shall we call it 'cute girl's determination'?). The goat girl idea is pretty refreshing too. ^^
Her clothes are gives off the aura of elegance, which combined with her pale skin and grey hair creates the "stylish" look.
Too sum up, cute, serious and stylish loli - one of those drawing that will stay as the tab in my browser for a number of days. ^^
