Description
Decided to repost this, but with some extra notes as to what I think may be happening in other parts of the world. Original map here: www.deviantart.com/metalheadjo…
This is a cover map of "The Only Thing to Fear/Live in Infamy" Duology by Caroline T Richmond, set at the end of the latter. Looking back, it's Soft AH, and I do mean soft, but it was my introduction to Alternate History, and for that I respect it. Some of the odder choices are specified directly from the text (cough, Italian Dakotas, cough), so I had to do some working around that.
Basically, the idea is that the Nazis made ASB super soldiers AND decided not to break the non-aggression pact with Stalin, who also made some Super Soldiers of his own (and so did Japan). As of the end of the second book, Revolution is brewing in the Americas and the USSR is at war with the Germans in Eastern Europe (As of the 2020s, again, Soft AH). Eastern Europe is described as being a Neutral Zone akin to the Rocky Mountain States from Man in the High Castle, which is why there is an odd patch between the Nazis and Soviets.
1. In mimicry of their German "allies" and their Soviet rivals, the Japanese have created their own system of prison camps in Alaska, primarily to contain members of the growing insurgencies
2. The Italian American Territories. Originally granted to Italy by Germany as a "reward" for being an ally as well as serving as the Italian occupation zone to free up German troops, there are rumors that the Italians are planning on selling the territories to either Germany or Japan due to their current economic crisis.
3. Mexico has close ties to Italy to this day, even as Italy becomes more insular.
4. Britain and France, the former entente, were both harshly punished for their "crimes" against the German volk in the interwar period. Neither state is in one piece, with Britain being divided into multiple territories, with England in particular living in poorer conditions under a gauleiter who prefers to spend more time socializing on the continent than actually doing government work. The French north was converted into a territory as well, and settled heavily by Germans like the other territories, although Vichy France ostensibly remains it's own independent state.
5. With relations between Germany and Italy looking ill, both Spain and Portugal see an opportunity to gain, and have made various outreaches to Berlin to replace Rome as the other major European state. Berlin looks down upon them as a "lazier race" like they do the Italians, but see the potential competition as a way to keep the last independent European states divided against eachother and not united against the Reich
6. The borderlands were hastily carved between the USSR and Germany after WW2 in an effort to preserve the Non-Aggression pact at the expense of the countries already there. Stalin begrudgingly gave up some of his gains, thinking a buffer would be better than an open gate. Many dissenters from both the Reich and the USSR have fled here, but many are sympathetic to the communist cause. As of now, the region has become a warzone as Soviet troops have pushed into Nazi Poland.
7. Formerly Italian North Africa was sold to Germany and eventually converted into Territories thanks to their closeness to Europe. The locals are utilized as a slave labor force. Many former Italian colonists have returned to the homeland or migrated to North America.
8. In contrast, the Italians have declared they will never let go of the horn of Africa, and have begun resorting to German methods to maintain control. Most of the rebels have turned to the USSR for support.
9. On the flip side, communist regimes have been propped up by the USSR in east Africa. Kenya in particular is attempting to mimic Stalin's five-year plan to become an industrial power. The anti-communist rebels are backed by Germany, funnily enough. How else do you explain the vintage German weaponry they have?
10. The southern hemisphere is the freest part of the world, as it is mostly ignored by the major powers. Many dissidents flee to these regions in hopes of starting new lives, although Axis influence is definitely there, mainly in Apartheid South Africa and Japanese-influenced Peru.
11. The Middle East is independent, but not very free, with each state being under an authoritarian ruler of some kind. They maintain their independence and neutrality using their oil wealth, but fear of Soviet expansion may push them into the German camp.
12. The Chinese territories have always been restless, and have become a black hole for the Japanese Army. The expected Soviet weapons are found in the hands of the resistance, but strangely, some German weapons have been recovered from resistance bases as well. Thailand remains the only truly independent state in the region
13. Manchukuo remains ostensibly under the old Qing dynasty, but is essentially a Japanese Territory in all but the name, and with a local ruler rather than a magistrate from the home islands.
